When Marge confronted Tom about why Tom was wearing Dickie's rings, did the 'penny drop' for Tom in Marge's eyes?
Marge told Tom "Dickie always wears his rings" and for Marge to see Tom wearing Dickie's rings alarm bells were ringing figuratively speaking.
Could Tom have provided a plausible explanation to Marge as to why he was wearing Dickie's rings? There's lots of scenarios Tom could've conjured up if he was "talented" enough..
Yeah, but think back to every time that Tom's been cornered and he would panic then just get rid of them. Ripley wasn't really a good lier especially when suddenly confronted about something. So after Dickie, he saw that he had power to make them stop asking questions.
Yes, of course he could have. Who would dispute his explanation, apart from Marge? But he was very lucky that Peter appeared when he did, because if he had murdered Marge with the razor as he clearly intended, he would not have escaped detection.
My impression of him with the razor in his bathrobe pocket was that if the explanation he was going to give to Marge about the rings wasn't good enough (didn't satisfy her) then he was going to "accidentally" cut himself with the razor, like he did, in order to buy some time.
I don't think he would've even thought about killing her because: The police inspectors were always showing up and the Landlady thought Ripley was Greenleaf and she could show up at any moment.
I don't see that. I think he was going to rashly kill Marge as he killed Freddie when he realised that Freddie was on to him. To him, it wwas a matter of self-preservation. Dickie's murder was accidental.
I agree I got the impression he was about to kill Marge because she was onto him and was just gripping the razor that cut him because he was feeling the murderous impulse coming up like his body tensed and got cut but that he was so focused on emotion he didn't even feel it.
