What did Freddie do?

It was never really explained but we know why Dickie was in Europe, but why was Freddie there? Was he a rich trust funder who was the same? Maybe he was an accomplice to Dickie almost beating a guy to death? I always wondered why he was there.

Interesting question. We can see that Freddie had money at his disposal, and assume he was at a loose end after graduating from Princeton, and was traveling around Europe. A rich trust funder.

It just seemed strange he would show up kind of at random. He hadn't seen Dickie for a while but if they were such good friends why didn't he stay around? Literally the first we hear of him is when he shows up in Rome. Did he go back and forth between other places besides Italy?

Yes, Freddie was a kind of jetsetter. This lifestyle, of wealthy young Americans traveling around Europe, was known since at least the 1920s and continues to this day. He would go to visit friends, go off to ski, go to various festivals and events. Dickie was more rooted; he had his boat and his life with Marge. I don't believe his trust fund was as large as Freddie's, because he had wanted a car and a refrigerator which he did not have til Tom arrived. But perhaps it was, since Tom was able to live quite lavishly once he had assumed Dickie's identity.

According to Freddie, he was chasing and bedding women.
