The Randy scene was terrible

As far as Scream movies go, this one is pretty bad. "All I know about trilogies is that in the last one, all bets are off". Could this be the most cringe-worthy line in the whole series? Yikes!

On topic though...Randy....including this scene was clearly fan service since people were upset that he was killed off in the second movie, but I think it would have been so much better if they'd just left it out. Randy's death was powerful and dark and really raised the stakes in the second movie. The video tape scene in 3 lessened the impact of it and its only purpose was to give some worthless exposition about trilogies. I think the trilogy dialogue throughout was just so cheesy....somehow the meta-talk about horror movies in the first film and sequels in the second felt organic but in this one it was just so forced and silly.

Also, why was Randy's sister sitting in some random trailer on the film lot coincidentally at the same time the gang is there scoping things out? She came all the way from Woodsboro for that?

Much of this film just seems so half-assed and forced where the first two (and even 4) made some of the more far-fetched elements work....or at least so much any other elements worked that you were able to suspend disbelief.

This scene is probably the most blatant example of much of what is wrong with the film overall.

I never really understood why the sister was there with Randy's video either.

^ That was always MUCH more worthy of criticism

I never took Randy's 'appearance' to be much more than a way to get him back in the series one last time

I'll take a potato chip...and EAT IT!!

Very forced indeed. And the supposed rules about (horror) trilogies weren't even true or relevant.

He's a likeable loser and I think a lot of horror fans could relate to him. He's also the most meta character of the movies, so the audience could identify with him even more.

I think it's a terrible and needless scene in a great movie.

But "You Wish It Was Ted!" and "Your lemon squares taste like ass" Are by far the worst lines in the series. Not to mention *beep* Bruce Willis!"

As for what you said about half-assed, that's Scream 2 by a mile. It's the laziest of the whole series (but by no means the worst).

Scream 3 and 4 were waaaay more inventive in almost evey respect, especially the writing.

"See it with someone you love...Go by yourself"

The reason that this movie wasn't as good as the first 2 is because the script wasn't written by Kevin Williamson, though he did come up with the basic plot of this movie the dialogue is noticeably less witty than Scream 1 and 2
