What's the Point?

i didn't understand the movie. it is -cinematographically- not bad. but i couldn't understand the relationships among three stories.

why is there three stories?
or what changes the stories?

what happens so that they constitute a whole ???

i really doubt!!!

It's not very complicated.

To make it short: it's quantum physics, non determinism vs. determinism, choice v. s. fate, etc. The 3 stories are 3 possible paths in the space-time continuum, all 3 form a whole in a sense that it gives us a broader picture about the people and events in the story. It's a very philosophical movie.

"But, Lola manages to learn from her previous runs... ?"

NO SHE DOESN'T, sorry bro

(she figures out a safety looking at the gun, its not rocket science!)

reply

it's the fact that every second counts.
Each version starts off with her passing by the dog. and the story continues from there. For example..the second version shows her getting tripped and falling down the stairs..which delayed her to an extent. This also affectd the time she got to her dad's work, because his love interest had gone further in her explanation that the baby wasn't his..in the third version, mr. meyer doesn't get into car crash, which allows him to arrive to meet lola's dad on time.
Watch it again, it will make sense :)

In the first version, Lola sticks to only one option : At any cost get money from her dad, which screws 'cos her boyfriend s dead

In the 2nd version, Lola's boyfriend sticks to one option: Rob the super market, which also screws since lola is dead..

In the 3rd version, both lola n her boyfriend dont stick to one option... First lola finds an opportunity to earn money and she uses her special talent (Shouting)to get it.. Even her boyfriend finds an opportunity (finds da beggar with money bag), uses his talent n gets back his money..

Movie's Storyline.......

Dont stick to one option, use ur talent wen u find opportunity..

This s wat i understood from the movie...

So guys please stop complaining.. The problem is not with the movie, its wit u guys who r complaining

You guys are both out of order.

1st: She robs the store with him and she gets shot by the Polizei.

2nd: She robs the bank, escapes, and he Manni hit by the ambulance.

3rd: He finds the hobo, she wins the money, and all is great.

I don't think this film has anything to do with "quatum physics"...

My interpretation was that this WAS a video game type thing. At the start of the film, the fat man says:

"The Ball is round. The game lasts 90 minutes. That's a fact.
Everything else is pure theory.
Here we go!"

This starts the "game" in which Lola has to save her boyfriend. She gets as many tries as she wants in 90 minutes.
Try 1: She *beep* up but learns how to use a gun.
Try 2: Since she now knows how to use a gun, she gets the idea of robbing the bank (she also knew where to go because she looked around in try 1) but all the small events causes Manni to die at the end by getting hit by the ambulance.
Try 3: Again, the small differences in the events cause her dad leaving the bank but instead she gets the idea of making money at the casino. From try 2, she knows that the ambulance stops at the meeting point so she uses that.

I think this is the only way I can explain how she is able to remember the previous segments. The fat man who starts the "game" also has memory as he says:

"You've come at last, dear"

in the third try and I believe it is only him and Lola who has memory.

I know this is abit crazy...

i really like this explanation, i wouldn't have thought of it this way, but it actually makes the most sense.

In addition to some of the very good answers given above, I would add that the film also makes a point about the arbitrary nature of the film narrative.

In a personal note, if it hadn't been raining in Rome on August 4th, 1975, and I hadn't stopped to have an early lunch to stay dry, my children wouldn't exist, because I wouldn't have met my future wife.

About your personal note: are you happy?

In addition to the video game explanation (which I think is very good), I think there is a theory that the movie is trying to show that time is cyclical. So while we are seeing these parallel universes of sorts, Lola learns new things from different parallel universes that happen(on our level) at the same time. Now whether or not she lives all 3 scenarios in a row or lives all 3 "at the same time" is hard for me to understand (I suppose it would be easier to assume she lives all 3 in a row since she learns to use the gun at the end of scenario 1 and uses that knowledge in the middle of scenario 2). However it is probably ok to think that we shouldn't assume the beginning/middle/end positions in all three distinctly since it might expose our human misunderstanding of our interpretations of time itself.

In the end, I think the point of the movie is "time".
