Can anyone recommend good films that take place in modern day Germany. I've taken up a little personal project to become fluent in German. I've been studying for about two months and I'm doing well with speaking and reading, but listening is driving me crazy. I get lost in the sentences so easily. I'm hoping to use some movies (and music too if you know any) to get a better feel for the rhythm of the language at a typical conversational pace. I'd really appreciate modern films too so that I can get used to modern German vernacular. Thanks in advance.
Soul Kitchen - funny, modern Der Baader Meinhof Komplex - 70s terrorism in West-Germany Knockin on heavens door - funny, modern Das Boot - WW2 - submarine-drama Gegen die Wand - hefty drama of turkish imigrants, modern Downfall - WW2 - last days of Hitler The lives of others - GDR-drama (won an oscar) The miracle of Bern - fairytale-drama about a boy following germanys national soccer-team become worldchampion in '54
definitely check out 'berlin calling'...difficult to get a copy in the U.S, but not impossible..both the film itself as well the soundtrack will blow your mind...great story and acting, by 1st time actor, paul kalkbrenner.

I don't know much of modern day german movies, but here are some:
1. Kirschblüten - Hanami (this one got several awards) 2. Shoppen (sooooooooo funny :) 3. Vincent will Meer (a friend of mine likes it, haven't seen it myself) 4. Alles auf Zucker! (really funny too, more on the black side of humour) 5. Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei (this is sort of a cult-movie in my clique) 6. Das Experiment (thrilling as hell :)
I have to say i enjoyed all of them, though they are not my favorite movies. If you like the series "The office" you should try "Stromberg". It's the german version of it and in my opinion better than the original or the american version. It's a bit darker but great.
Now some bands who use the german language in a -in my opinion- quite rhythmic way. I guess it's important to like the music cause then it's easier to listen to. I'm more into rock music, so I'll name some bands out of that genre:
1. Tocotronic (indie-rock) 2. Blumfeld (indie-rock, the last albums like "verbotene früchte" are more folky, i really like that phase of them) 3. Die Ärzte ( a punk/pop/rock-Band that is really famous in germany and totally unknown in other countries. Funny, sometimes sad, cynical, absurd and always with love for great melodies. It's great to grow up listening to their music) 4. Huah! (indie-pop-rock-soul with quite cryptical lyrics) 5. Spliff (new wave) 6. Die goldenen Zitronen ( go for theri later albums like "Lenin" or "Das bisschen Totschlag", experimental music with cynical lyrics) 7. Einstürzende Neubauten (monolithic music with monolithic lyrics) 8. F.S.K. (indie-rock) 9. Rammstein ( you know them, don't you? I'm not a big fan, still their lyrics are sort of cool sometimes)
Now i hope you're not into hip-hop, because then the list would'nt really be useful :)
I absolutely loved Run Lola Run & in general I like German movies. I was looking for something that was not about WWII, like the OP. Thanks for the recommendations.
Send lawyers, guns and money/The *beep* has hit the fan
Most of the recommendations by others but that doesn't make them bad. There is a lot to say of german history so there are plenty of movies about ww2 as it changed so many peoples' lives.
Of the movies mentioned in the posts above I concur and highly recommend "The Lives of Others". Try also watching "Revanche" (Revenge) also, a crime story.
