Excellent film... however let down by last third (spoilers)
Have to say I extremely enjoyed the movie and its quirky style... Very surprising actually as far as I'm concerned as fast paced contemporary action stuff isn't really my main interest. Well, Kieslowski has done the basic idea before Tykwer with "Blind Chance" (1987) as someone on this board already pointed out, though this is an extraordinary re-interpretation. There are lots of fresh ideas, cinematographic ones and in terms of storytelling, or let's say, it's a good mix of ideas that worked elsewhere but were used very effectively here in a film that brought it all together. Cartoons, flash-forwards, interspersed black and white etc. - it all works for me.
Then again, the story could have been a bit better in parts, I'd say, but what really, really hurt in my point of view was that the last third almost derailed the whole fascination of the breakneck speed film feast... The most glaring nonsense was to get the bright idea to suddenly go for a win in the casino in exactly two minutes, and of course bet again on the same number, just for the sake of the odds. Or something like that... Also completely stupid was the bum ending up with the pistol for no apparent reason à la: Here, take at least the gun, it's the least I can do for you... If he'd used it and took the money again nobody could complain, eh?
Is it just me or was the third part a real let down for others as well?
