Accuracy

I don't mean historically accurate, but how true is this to the original legend of King Arthur and Merlin and all that? I've seen so many different versions I can't really figure it out.

I'm no expert on the Arthurian legends, but from what I can tell, there are lots of different versions of the legend (eg. in some, it is Morgause and not Morgan Le Fay who is Mordred's mother, Nimue and the Lady of the Lake are one and the same, etc.)- it depends on which version you compare it to as to how accurate it is. I think most of the basic points are true to the Arthurian legends- Merlin served Vortigern, Uther and Arthur, helped Uther seduce Igraine, Arthur had a son (Mordred) who then battled with him, etc.

There are several parts of the film that aren't in any of the various legends of King Arthur- Queen Mab, for example, despite being the best part of the film (for me anyway), was never affiliated with the Arthurian legends, at least not that I'm aware of. She's referred to in some works of literature (Shakespeare, for example) as a fairy queen, and from what I can gather, she is also believed to be a pagan goddess- though under several names (apologies to any pagans if I got that wrong, I'm not particularly well-informed on the subject). Frik was a character who, I believe, was created just for this miniseries. So, as far as accuracy goes, it certainly takes some fairly heavy duty liberties with the original legends, but seeing as there are many different versions anyway, just how far from the legend you feel it is depends, as I said, on what version of the legend you consider to be "true"

i love this movie and i personally think that it is one of the best re tellings of arthurian legends.

but to answer your question, like the person above me said, in the original stories, Mab and Frik never were associated with king arthur or Merlin. Mab was known as Queen of the Faeries though.

Merlin was the son of a princess and presumably, a fairy man (some say an incubus. His love for Nimue, wasnt completely returned as, after he taught her all his magick and secrets, she trapped him in an oak tree in Broceliande Forest.

King Uther didnt take the throne from Vortigern. He succeeded the throne after his brother Aurelius Ambrosius died of poison. Aurelius succeeded the throne after King Constans (also Uther's and Aurelius's brother) was killed by Vortigern.

As for Lancelot, his wife Elaine and his song Galahad, their story wasnt as a married couple. Lancelot did sleep with Elaine, thinking she was Guinevere, but after finding out that she wasnt, he abandoned her, and Elaine had a bastard son Galahad. Galahad later joined his father Lancelot and King Arthur's court.

and the only other difference, as much as i can remember is that after Mordred stabbed Arthur, and Arthur killed Mordred, Morgan Le Fey (Arthur's half sister) took Arthur to Avalon, the Isle of the Apples, where, according to the legend, he awaits until Britain needs him again.

i hope that helps. sorry that its a bit long. its not very hard to find information on King Arthur and his Knights
