The best film EVER!!!!

OMG

I remember when i watched it when it first came out, i was about 8 years old and the only characters i could remember were Merlin, of course, and Frick.

Now, nearly 17, i've fallen in love with it again.

It's such an amazing movie

I hope you all agree:]

I agree, it's a great film...one of my favorites. Beautiful cinematography and musical score, well-acted and surprisingly moving (the emotional depth of it got to me...I didn't expect that...especially in this disturbing day and age.)

It was also very well written with some great lines of dialog...

"Don't die Mordred"
"Die, Dear Auntie Mab...that's the last thing I shall do."

You may like 'Excalibur' from 1981 as well. I don't know which I like more. I love both of them. It tells the same story but through the eyes of King Arthur, also with great acting, writing, beautiful cinematography and musical score...directed by the great John Boorman.

This movie was pretty dumb imo. overly simplistic, over acted and obviously made for kids. Must be a generation thing. I wonder if you see something when you`re a kid nostalgia makes it a lifelong classic?

Go watch Caravan of Courage, Krull, Hawk the Slayer or Nausicaa. Much better fantasy movies. (But maybe I just think that because I saw them when I was a kid)

If you are talking about "Excalibur", I don't think so, nor do most others.

Many respected film critics have given it 4 stars (out of four) including Leonard Maltin. It has a 7.3 rating on IMDB, which is very respectable. It was nominated for one Oscar and nominated for nine other awards, winning two.

The ones you mention: "Caravan of Courage", "Krull", and "Hawk the Slayer" have IMDB ratings of 5.1, 5.8, and 4.8, respectively.

If you are talking about "Merlin", the same argument pretty much applies. A 6.8 rating is still pretty respectible and it was nominated for 4 Golden Globes and another 7 wins & 15 nominations.

Case closed.

It's an interesting thought- I know that I first saw Merlin when I was about 10 years old, and I love it still- although, having said that, I do genuinely enjoy the film in itself when I watch it, whereas most films from my childhood, I spend half the time thinking, "Ahhh, I remember when I used to watch this when I was younger...." *end nostalgic moment*. I don't get that with Merlin so much.

Having said that, there are other films that I used to like when I was younger that now make me cringe in almost physical pain at the memory.

Try not to panic. Just think of it as landing a little more vertically than usual

I saw this movie when I was 38, I actually was recording it as I watched it. It remains to be one of the more compelling films I have ever seen - period. I say it is as compelling as movies like Blood Diamond, Jarhead, The New World, Mystic River and Hotel Rwanda. (All of which I highly recommend).

I love the time period, and I have always loved the Arthurian Legends, and this movie gives a new view to it all. Instead of just going along the line of 'Merlin shows up to a young Wart, trains him and tutors him, then young Wart becomes King Arthur of Camelot', this film takes you along the lines of Merlin's past, beginning to end. And that is what I like. Instead of 'Poof, here's Merlin', it's 'here is how Merlin came to be, with all his powers and wisdom'.

And not only is it 'coming of age with Merlin', but the coming of age in a new time. Not only is this movie centred around Merlin, but also if the struggles of two religions slashing together, both demanding to survive.

It's a great film, well acted, well filmed. The special effects for Miranda Richardson's Lady of the Lake were beautiful.

It gets a lot of flack because "it doesn't follow King Arthur legends". Bull. There are too many legends to count, so any one is as good as another. And the little bit of legend about Merlin pre-Arthur are what's included here, that he had no mortal father, Vortigen's tower, etc. Queen Mab is in the fairy legends. So like any movie of this type, they took small pieces of legend and wove into great story.

This is definitely one of the best mini-series ever (up there with 10th Kingdom) but why is it so underrated on here? It deserves to at least be a 7.

I agree!

I guess that the director's filming language counts a lot: he is an MTV director.
So, his point of view is similar to ours all...

The story is a very good one. I have read that others viewers have also experienced a constant deception in their quest for another movie like Boorman's King Arthur... I had finally ended reading the medieval book to expand my previous joy. Now, this film could continue it.
I see the complete bunch of legends all intertweened in one complete story. And this is much more than I was expecting.
I miss, though something interesting from Merlin's legend: it was said that his complete mature life was lived by him in an oposite direction. That was the reason of his knowing of the future, since he had already lived it. But if the writer would have added this legend, perhaps it would have contradicted the rest of the story...

Another nice thing of this film is that the evil characters are also lovable. I share Queen Mabs worries since they really finally became true, as Shakespeare also appreciated in one of his plays. Today, we are living in a logical world where everything that is not, is considered an alienation.
Queen Mab was not against the new religion, but worried about people loosing the complete experience of nature and life. Thanks to the people of the '60s we are now able to understand her.

The photography is so nice! Any frame could make a very beautiful poster.

I wonder how could any member of this film feel after performing such a masterpiece!
