Did she?

Hey, i adore this series but there's one thing that i couldn't find the answer, i mean Mab died because everyone forgot her but she screams « I love you» to Merlin! Is it true? Does she actually cared about him? For most of the film she was a little bitch to him but she indeed loved him? Can someone inform me?

Cheers!

Matter of opinion I guess. She was pretty manipulative and certainly not above lying. But he was her child, so she probably did. Not that that fact made a difference in her plans for him...

You think that she did everything she could to kill him? She trained him and then she wanted to kill him? And Merlin was such a pain in the ass sometimes to her, i mean, i bit annoying, wasn't he?

reply

Well, I think she was telling the truth, 1) Because I am a total and unashamed Mab fangirl, and 2) Because in the novelisation, I forget the exact passage, but I believe it said that Mab and her kind couldn't lie outright. Also, she says to Nimue earlier on in the film that she loves Merlin, and hates him, too. So yes, I think she loved him, but ultimately the Old Ways were her first loyalty, and when Merlin set himself against her and them, it didn't matter that she loved him.

Mind you, I don't think she did everything to kill him that she could have done- after all, she attempts to engineer Arthur's death (the griffins, Mordred etc.), though she's unsuccessful, and the novelisation also confirms that she influenced Vortigern to come to Britain in the first place, and kill King Constant. And yet, she never actually directly tried to attack or kill Merlin himself until their final battle. For the first part, and the beginning of the second, she tries to lure him back to her side.

I think she did because she tried so many times to change Merlin's mind to help her and not directly hurt him. Mab or Frik also said Merlin was a disappointment. Would she have killed Merlin in the end? Maybe, she was pissed off, but she could have easily killed him as he turned his back on her to forget her.

I don't think she was ever trying to kill him. She was trying to get him to use magic to defend himself so that he would realize how awesome it was and do what she created him for. He was just stubborn, and so she had to keep trying. If she had wanted to kill him she could have just gotten some guy to assassinate him, or has a fairy poison him.

Why settle with words what you can settle with a flamethrower?

As I recall it one of the last thing she squealed was "You fag!" though that might just be a grunting noise.

reply

LMAO! I'm pretty sure it's "Look at me!" mixed with a sort of whimper, but it is rather hard to make out.

Of course she loved him!!! She loved him, and hated him, too. he was a big disappointment to her, but no matter, in her way I know there was love there.

Isn't it said that the bad angel cast out of heaven, Lucifer, loves God?

reply

I don't recall that, but I bet Merlin would of turned around at that point. If nothing else to give her a WTF look.

Its odd, the books say her kind can't lie and on 2 occasions during the film she comments that she loves him (and hates him).

However I remember ambrosia saying that Mab no longer has the ability to Love due to people forgetting her, also didnt the books say that she had a lover (or the capacity to love) but turned her back as her heart grew colder as people forgot her? (Not to sure on that point)

Anyways, I always got the impression that her final moments were just trying to spark an emotion within Merlin that in turn would give Mab power through him remembering her.

Yes, in the books, she and Idath (the Lord of Death) had been lovers at some time in the past.

With the comments about her being unable to love, I got the feeling that it was hard for her to love, almost as if she didn't know how to show her love, and she turned her back on it to save the old ways/ have vengeance- after all, when Mordred dies, I believe she refers to him as "her champion, her child, her love...", and when she asks Idath to save him, he replies that she "chose vengeance over love", implying that she still feels love, but has put it aside, in a way, at the same time.

Hmmm....i'll have to watch it again but from what i remember i don't think Mab ever loved Merlin.

She showed no particular care for him when she called for him to take his place and learn magic. Frik taught him.

Merlin was always a tool for Mab. Perhaps she had a care for him, as she had always wanted and expected him to be with her. But her understanding of Merlin and how to interact with him was impaired. There little war was a funny game for her i believe.

It's quite possible she was lying to Nimue. Or perhaps on some level she meant it.

But i firmly believe that the first time she genuinely showed her weakness (if it was indeed genuine or not) it was used as a last ditch device to get Merlin on side by saying what she though he needed to hear. I don't believe it was genuine.

As others have stated she does say that she loves and hates Merlin. I think the reason she shouts it out at that time is a last attempt to get him to not turn his back on her.
