Still so awesome

With the resurgence of westerns (again! lol), everyone needs to consider revisiting Ravenous. This movie holds up and then some: writing, directing, acting, and -good god- the soundtrack duo of Albarn and Nyman!!! As either an allegorical send-up of aggressive capitalism and manifest destiny or just as a straight-up hilarious and terrifying tale, it's an under-appreciated classic. Bravo!

Yup
Weird and creepy...gloriously great stuff!

The soundtrack is brilliant.

Looking back at all of the movies that came out in '99, it really makes me miss that era more than ever.

I was just watching another '99 release "Wonder Boys" with Robert Downey Jr, Mike Douglas, and Tobey Maguire and it saddens me to see how all 3 of them are not doing these kinds of movies anymore. RDJ's mostly known as a superhero, Maguire is MIA, and the last Douglas movie I saw him in he was playing a parody of an aging old coot on par with the "grumpy old man" roles many actors his age are relegated to.

Wonder Boys is in my all-time top 5. I've never heard anyone else mention it, but it is truly one of the most underrated films in the dramedy/coming of age drama genre. A great script. A lot of heart, a lot of laughs, and great performances. Glad you got to see it.

I went to college in California, but when I saw "Wonder Boys" back then it made me nostalgic for my college days in a real visceral way. I use to have professors like Tripp and had friends like Crabtree, and classmates like Leer. This movie also got me into reading Michael Chabon's novel and other works as well.

That's great. I'd lived more of the "James Leer lifestyle", surrounded by books/movies in a basement alone. Then, as I got older, I found it funny just how much I started to connect with Grady in so many ways. That's really one of the best aspects of the film - realistic characters from different generations going through realistic experiences. One can watch it when they're young and be right there with James or Hannah, only to get older and find yourself having the same experiences as Grady and Sara. I've always wanted to read the novel. I heard there were some bits that didn't make the movie. Something about a snake, I believe.

It really is an overlooked little masterpiece.

Strange, twisted, gruesome, with a heavy dose of black humor.

I forgot about this movie. Yes, it was an enjoyable watch.

reply

Yeah it’s amazing, perfectly paced, pitched and with some jaw-dropping twists. Can you even imagine a film as eccentric and brilliant as this hitting theatres today?
