Ives' sanity

I'm wondering; When Colqhoun/Ives starts acting like a mad animal at the cave, is that his true self coming out or is he doing it as some sort of psychological ploy? Later in his Ives persona he acts completely human and rational. EVIL, but human.
I don't think someone that crazy would be able to pose as a smooth manipulator, but I don't see the point in the feral wildman act.

I've always thought it was just a ploy to convince the others outside the cave that he was scared out of his mind and not a threat. "He's spooked," says Col. Hart. If he just started digging in the ground (which he had to do to get at the knife), seemingly rational, that would have caused much more suspicion.

"That is terrible advice, Ant1238."
