Or shoot whoever it was that decided the music should be 10 times louder than what's happening on screen. The music itself would be ok, if it were in the background most of the time, instead of drowning out the characters. This was one of the first times while watching a movie that I had to hit the mute button on my TV to keep my ears from bleeding.
Sorry, the music is *beep* awful in this movie. Just awful. Not a terrible movie, but the music is just weird as hell most of the time. It sounds like music from Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist at one point. I listen to ton of movie scores, so this isn't something like I'm an uncultured simpleton who needs to go listen to *beep* like Justin Bieber. The music is just *beep* Stop being a *beep* hipster and pretending you liked it just because it's odd.
It's funny that you say you're not an uncultured simpleton because you're entire post reveals the contrary. It's very unfortunate that you can't argue your beliefs in a rational manner and you must resort to abusive name calling. Even more telling is your labeling of others. You know what the best part is though? This movie is never going to change. You will always hate the score and it means nothing. haha I won't begin to elaborate on how well crafted the score was, no I'll let all the other fans do it for me. There is a post from someone like you on this message board with 90 replies, and guess what, approximately 80% of them are pro-soundtrack. Enjoy. The only thing I will add is that the soundtrack itself is a motif. The intro song is repeated, with slight changes, three times throughout the film. Each at a different interval in Boyd's life. Starting with is assignment at Fort Spencer, then after he has become a cannibal and eaten Pvt Riech, and lastly upon his death. Food for thought.
Pot, have you met kettle? And, wait, you're telling me that on a message board for a specific movie, that is bound to have fans of said movie, 80% claim to LIKE the soundtrack? Well, that clearly changes things. IMDB users could never POSSIBLY be wrong! I mean, it's not like there are bunch of people on the Channing Tatum board who think he's a GREAT actor, right? And, I'm sorry, I was unaware that I was required to take an argument on IM-fcking-DB with the utmost of seriousness. It's hilarious that you take yourself so seriously, especially on THESE boards. See, the funny thing to me is, at least to me? The music is always going to suck when paired with that film. Maybe on its own I might actually like it, but you put THAT music in THAT movie? Nope. Different strokes for different folks and all that, but as far as I'm concerned the music completely took away and distracted what COULD have been a good movie. A lot of scores are "motifs", as you stated it. It doesn't mean they fit the movie they're in or are any good. For example, Blood Diamond had a motif that worked. Things you couldn't necessarily call "themes", but played upon a motif. While, the music craftsmanship may be there for the music in Ravenous itself, it didn't work with the film to enhance it, it distracted from the film. It somehow made a musical score pretentious and needy like that kid in high school who always had to be the center of attention, no matter how disruptive they were being. That would be fine if it was some sort of conceptual art piece, but it wasn't.
My entire post was in response to this: "Yeah the soundtrack does the movie. Maybe go back and pop in your justin bieber cd"
So, if before you climb atop your high horse, maybe you want to moralize and get all smug with your own side's posting habits, as well, huh? And I DO appreciate you saying that my dislike of it "means nothing" as if that somehow matters to me.
Ok, so you think the IMDb users are wrong, fine.. How about Roger Ebert? "And I admired the visceral music, by Michael Nyman and Damon Albarn, which calls attention to itself (common) but deserves to (rare)."
Ok, let me get this straight: 80% of IMDB-Users like the Musik score, you don't = IMDB-Users are wrong Roger Ebert likes the Musik score, you don't = Roger Ebert is wrong
Couldn't this be more likely, you know... the other way around? I'm probably wrong too, just asking.
"Ok, let me get this straight: 80% of IMDB-Users like the Musik score, you don't = IMDB-Users are wrong Roger Ebert likes the Musik score, you don't = Roger Ebert is wrong"
NOW you're getting it! I don't know what THEIR problem is. (Oh, and also "musiC" not "musiK".)
"Couldn't this be more likely, you know... the other way around? I'm probably wrong too, just asking." Hm. No. Not at all. It's *beep*
oh, wow. michael nyman, who composed some of the finest film scores for great directors like peter greenaway and jane campion, is awful? i guess alexandre desplat would be out of your reach too?
cool story, bro.

Yet it's easily my favorite soundtrack of all time, it has been since 1999, and I absolutely love the way the music is employed with the rest of the film, too.
Maybe people just have different tastes?
When I saw Ravenous on its theatrical release, immediately afterwards I ran to a record store and picked up the soundtrack. And then I put it in my CD player and listened to it on repeat for about a week. That's all I listened to. That's the only time in my life I've ever done that with ANY album (and I was already in my 30s at the time).
My second favorite soundtrack, by the way, is Peter Gabriel's music for The Last Temptation of Christ.
The music in both films is relatively unusual, including that it's used relatively unusually as a soundtrack, and both have received a lot of complaints . . . which makes it all the more frustrating for someone with my tastes, because in my opinion the vast majority of films use music in a very boring way (and often the music as a stand-alone product is pretty boring, too), but filmmakers are often overly-cautious to avoid the types of complaints you have here.
The music is great BUT the audio mixing is off, indeed it is too loud in contrast to the dialogue BUT again a great soundtrack that I bought and enjoy quite a bit.
Loved the soundtrack, one of the only things that really stuck with me after watching the film. Did the music sort of remind anyone else of Final Fantasy 7?
The score's one of the best things about the film and elevates it a few levels above where it would be without it. Not only is it original and interesting but it's unnerving at times. Not everything has to be a generic orchestration. There's nothing wrong with some anachronistic music if it's pulled off as effectively as they were here.
Absolutely love the music in this film. The film itself has a unique tone and blend, and the off-kilter feel is perfect. Particularly fond of the score during the cave scene.
