Two versions

I love this movie. However the first time I saw it, there were a couple of extra scenes. For example, when he first reaches the fort, the rest of the 'inmates' are playing instruments poorly. This is in the CD sound track (Foster's Social Orchestra in real life), but not in any versions of the film I've seen since.
The first one is markedly better.
Anyone else notice this?

I showed this film when I was a theater projectionist. The print I received had a REEL THREE that was only four minutes long. Remember, a reel of film is usually around 20 minutes. So it was pretty obvious that the film had been reduced in length after the print makeup had been finalised. If you saw the film early in its release perhaps the cuts had not yet been made.

I know there are two versions and one is more widely seen in Europe while the other is considered the "American" release. The director, who sadly died pretty recently, preferred the European version. I haven't seen this but would love to. Maybe we'll get it in the Special Edition Bly Ray that's coming out.

All I know for sure Is that the opening of the European edition omits the opening quotes and the explanatory V.O., you know, the "you're no hero, Boyd" stuff.
