I think the real issue is that they were both terminal from existing wounds from the fight and the trap was to hold them in check until death so that Ives couldn't "regenerate" and it was an enforced suicide for Boyd.

I think some people won't understand that the top part of the trap coming down forced the lower part into Ives.
