6.9/10?!

Bunch of slack jawed fa*gots around here! This movie easily deserves a 7.5 or higher.

Couldn't agree with you more. Don't know what I am seeing that others miss, but I absolutely love it.

One of my favorites.

I thought the plot was pretty weak, and not enough dialogue, not enough character development. And what, you just eat human flesh and you get totally cured? Without any magic or pact with the devil or something? That's a stretch.

reply

But magic and a pact with the devil is NOT a stretch? Seems to me it's all called fantasy or sci fi or whatever but yes, I can buy that eating flesh makes you stronger and healthier IN A MOVIE! Nothing weak about the plot and the dialogue - take a look at posts about the best line from this movie - was plenty. Sometimes silence is needed to add to the atmosphere of suspense, no? Besides, Guy Pearce does some of his best acting when not talking. And how did you want the characters to develop in this? I say 10 out of 10 (and only because that is the highest)!

reply

Yeah everything's a stretch but there could at least be more of an explanation. If it's a world where canibalism heals you, where anyone can eat anyone for power, then people would have figured it out much sooner. I'm just saying add a specific factor/ingredient so that it works for just this group of people.
The characters... so many of them were dead before anything even got going. And they were talking about Cleaves being crazy or something, right? But then they didn't give him any funny lines. There were all these characters and it's like they didn't do anything with them. Not much anyway.

Cleaves wasn't crazy, he was a stoner (the heavily medicated Cleaves). Believe they developed that to the fullest (showed him getting stoned). The action for me started when Ives showed up outside the window, and at that point, no one was dead. The cannibal party was based of course on the Donner party and the reason no one knew about the "healing powers" is not a lot of people were cannibals in those days. It's lonely being a cannibal. And news didn't exactly spread quickly. It's okay for you not to like this movie. I don't mean to push it on you. But, if you like dark comedies and sci-fi or fantasy, I don't think anything in this movie is unbelievable. and the characters didn't really need to be deeper than their descriptions (a solider, a stoner, an indian woman, a drunk, etc.). If you're ever up for it, give the movie one more try knowing what's coming and see if you don't enjoy it this time. I hope.

reply

LOL! Exactly. It seems like there is a growing myth that more dialog and character development is some sort of necessary part of storytelling but the truth is the image is always stronger than the words. I feel Ravenous's visceral representation of it's subject matter alone is telling enough without writing *beep* cliche lines that will only encumber the thrust of the film.

Now lets all have a faggy circle jerk because we like the same movie.

These are some movies of mine. Enjoy!

The characters were especially well-developed for a horror film. Each in Fort Spencer were introduced. A man of faith, who's a stoner, a drunk doctor, a compassionate leader who doesn't enjoy his life, and the main character is a guilt-ridden traumatized man. As for Robert Carlyle, he made one of his most eccentric and eerie performances to date.

Also, there was an explanation for the healing properties of cannibalism. When a man eats human flesh, he becomes a wendigo. A spirit that partly possesses a man, changing him to a being who never gives but always takes and always feels hunger. In this film it was about absorbing a man's spirit though.

I'm really, really glad they didn't go down that route... Pact with the devil. Pfft.

Read a book if you want a ton of unnecessary character development and exposition. Most of the characters died in short order anyway so why take the time to get to know them? and know what about them exactly? The side characters backgrounds were not important to the movie. We needed and got a good backstory on Boyd and that was all that was required.

The wendigo legend is clearly described in the movie. Magic or a pact with the devil would have been ridiculous.

It's a shame you've gotten so hung-up on these details because you're missing out on a solid movie.

It's actually my favorite film. My favorite film of all time. I haven't seen a better movie in my 30 years on this planet. In MY eyes it's 9.9/10, but I believe it's fair to not be as high in others' eyes.
