This movie bored me to tears.

Personally I thought it started out well, it had really good potential. But I saw the whole 'it's a trap' thing coming, and after they had reached the cave I felt like it just all went downhill from there.
Maybe I was tired that night, I don't know, but it felt tedious and contrived to me.

reply

Some of the story elements are arguably a little contrived, but it was very well pulled off, in my opinion. It slows down at certain points, but can't say I was ever bored by it. I thought the plot developed pretty well and the interaction of the characters alone kept my attention. Very well cast / acted. The movie does a good job of putting you in the minds of all the characters; simply through the way they reciprocated with one another. Good story telling.

reply

Of course the story elements are "contrived." That's because it's a parable, a morality play, not a realistic story. I thought it was brilliant.

reply

I think you hyped up the cave as being what the movie is about. Many people entering the movie are familiar with the folklore.. So, we weren't as disappointed when the 'twist' came, I guess.

Goes to show how some spoilers are worth knowing.

reply

Hmm...It wasn't so much that I expected a different twist, it just seemed like the movie lost momentum after the first 15 minutes.
The acting was well done though, and carried what would have been an otherwise incredibly boring movie for me.

i just want to point out that the film makers weren't trying to make a horror film but a commentary on american expansion and ideals, how wendigo is in essences our search for happiness we want want want. in a way its scarier than a horror film. because we can't stop ourselves.

reply

Yup, this film was about American Imperialism and its ravenous need to consume all with no thought of morality.

reply

Are you serious? This film is 'a commentary on american expansion and ideals, how wendigo is in essences our search for happiness we want want want' and it's what has made it such a decently rated horror film?

To hell with you all! TV series like Wayward Pines are highly rated yet I watch them and they are utter trash.

I am seriously not on the same wave length as a lot of you, because some films that are highly rated have ended up being some of the worst films I ever watched. Some of the new David Cronenburg films are highly rated with forum commentors explaining how the films have 'great acting' or 'amazing cinematography' or 'fantastic symoblism'. Good grief, is this what makes a good film to you? How about enjoying a film and finding it engrossing from start to finish?

I was going to watch this film but now I'll gladly skip. Thank god for these forums.

reply

Momentum? I see what you did there....

reply

That problem is your rotted attention span, not the film.

reply

The film is much deeper than just another splatter flick, maybe you should re-watch it with that in mind and you may have a greater appreciation for this excellent flick.

reply

You need to watch it till the end. I would agree that the film is much deeper, but I don't think it wants to appear that way, take the ending for example. How many times did they both go down and get stabbed or beaten etc. Overlying impression is it is a funny, splatter-fest with a grerat story and great acting, Underlying theme is to do with human nature and how greedy and *beep* up we are.....Combine the two? BLOODY BRILLIANT

reply

I had a hard time staying awake also. It's like a vampire movie without vampires.

The dreadful musical score doesn't help either. I honestly think I could do a better job at scoring the music for this movie. It ruined the mood and atmosphere of the scene more than a few times.

Guy Pearce's performance was pretty good though.

It's probably more entertaining if you're drunk.

reply

I thought the musical score made the movie that much more creepy..

reply

is this supposed to be horror or what?

Horror/comedy/action/adventure/western/drama. :)

I loved this movie. I thought the soundtrack was great and evened out the dark mood and violence with cheery tunes that made it seem a little more lighthearted than what it was. The cast was really good, too. I couldn't stop laughing at General Slauson and Major Knox every time they were on screen.

reply

I hated this film the first time I saw it. Now it's one of my favourites and gets a watch every six months or so. I'd suggest going back and watching it again.

Actually, half the reason I watch it over and over is the superb soundtrack. The main theme is a masterpiece of simplicity which would be pretty puerile without the banjo polyrhythm in the background. Genius.

reply

agreed. if you watch it once and don't like it, you don't understand it.

reply

I always love that trite little phrase, if you don't like it it's because you don't understand it. Maybe you like it because YOU don't understand it.
I watched it, I understand it, it is boring. It is pretentious and overblown, with few real exciting or interesting parts, and a good many truly ludicrous parts, but they are NOT funny, just stupid.

reply

Like with all other movies, whether or not people like Ravenous is a matter of opinion. In some cases it's probably about "getting it" or "not getting it", but it's also a matter of taste in movies IMO.

Personally I like this movie, although it might not make it in my Top 10. It's original and surprisingly funny in a dark, crazy sort of way. I love that, and I love the strong performances, especially Robert Carlyle's portrayal of Calqhoun/Ives.

reply

The first time I watched it, a couple of years ago, I was a bit drunk, just like someone above, and I thought it was, well, bloody hilarious. Though it was hard to tell who did what and who killed who)) But I clearly felt there was much more going underneath the 'funny horror' trip. This time I watched Ravenous for Guy Pearce -- surely it didn't get any worse for that :D Just got to love everything about it!

reply

Sorry that this isn't Transformers. You should re-watch this when you graduate middle-school.

reply

Some people really are pathetically snobby.

Imagine considering Ravenous (1999) some high brow art that only intelligent adults could understand and enjoy. Lmao. It's a goofy little film.

Talk about boring, watch The Blair Witch Project again. Compare the two and you would say that The Blair Witch Project is more boring. Count how much she talks about the twigs in the woods making noises, and count the f-words, and watch how long she shows her snot hanging from her nose. Is that really entertaining to watch someone hang their snot? Plus, The Blair Witch Project had a 5 minute black out, which is not scary at all.

Both came out the same year. So that is why I compare the two. I rather enjoy this than the crap witch one. You never even see a witch in that movie either. All talk and no show in The Blair Witch Project.

I am a gore watching freak!!!

If it don't have it, it isn't worth the watch.
