Why was Joe so nervous going into their 'first date'?

When Joe and his friend Kevin (played by Dave Chappelle) are heading to Joe's "first date" with Kathleen at the coffee chop, he seems to be very nervous. Isn't this out of character? Joe is supposed to be a successful businessman who already has a girlfriend. Maybe he opened his heart too much in his e-mails to Kathleen in a way he never has, and feels exposed?

Out of character? I don't mean to be rude but if you wanna express a thought you had just say it, no need to make a pretend question for it. Of course he's gonna be extra nervous seeing someone he's never seen but emailed with for a while. That has nothing to do with how he acts as a businessman or with other people in general.

It could be a bit out of character, considering the scene was really taken from Lubitsch's The Shop in The Corner. The whole movie is inspired by it but this is the only scene (as well as the one that follows in the café) where some exact lines are retold.
So, successful businessman Joe is actually talking like the salesman who just got fired for no reason Kralik, and that could explain the oddness.`
Still, the scene never stroke me as absolutely unbelievable. After all, Joe is somhow a jumpy fellow. And meeting in real life a close internet mate must make one quite nervous !
