The Shop Around the Corner.
I know this is based on 1940 classic, so I was wondering (for anyone who's seen TSatC) if Kinnear played the backstabbing ladies man character like Vadash.

shareNot really. Frank (Greg Kinnear's character) is egocentric, but in a comic way. He does end one romantic relationship because he's attracted to another woman, but he's honest - even feeling guilty about it. Also, the woman he leaves is fine with it, since she's more interested in someone else.
YGM really only used the "lovers exchange mail without realizing they know each other" plot, not the other stories that are followed in TSatC. The parallels I've observed involving other characters aren't overly striking:
1) In both movies, a friend and co-worker of the male lead peeks at the woman waiting in a cafe and makes a comment about her coloring (but this is part of the "unwitting lovers" plot).
2) Employees in TSatC wait for the boss to open the store, and in YGM a single employee is seen similarly waiting.
3) We hear that an employee in YGM has been promoted to a position where he now exercises authority, which is vaguely similar to Pepi's promotion in TSatC.
That movie "In the Good Old Summertime" is supposed to be like "The Shop Around the Corner, but it's set, in the early century, Chicago (instead of Budapest), in a music store. So "You Got Mail" may not be exactly like the first movie, but the premise is the same.
shareSince In the Good Old Summertime is a musical, a fair fraction of its time is taken up by the songs. As a result, like YGM, it spends less time on the characters other than the central couple than does TSAtC. However, I'd say that in general ItGOS is a closer adaptation of the source material than YGM.
Incidentally, YGM gives "based on" credits to TSAtC and to the original play "Parfumerie", but not to ItGOS (nor to "She Loves Me", the stage musical based on the same material).
I didn't get the impression that the supporting characters of You've Got Mail were based on the supporting characters of The Shop Around the Corner.
