Coconut Transfusion

Believe it or not, this is lifted straight from fact. Coconut juice can be used as a TEMPORARY substitute for blood plasma in an emergency. Whilst building the Burma-Thailand railway in the second world war, medics in forced labour camps actually rigged these up, and using old coke bottles, and bits of bamboo for needles, coconut juice was used in transfusions! So there you go folks!

I saw this film years ago and was dubious about the whole thing. But a couple of months ago, I went to an excellent museum in Kanchanaburi in Thailand (where the famous Bridge Over The River Kwai is) and went to a museum about the building of the railway and the bridge. There I learnt that medics really did use coconuts for emergency transfusion. I shouted "Oooh!" quite loudly, then had to explain to a lot of bemused tourists, in the middle of this horrific, sombre, and harrowing museum, that the reason I was so excited was becuase I'd seen this in a Jackie Chan movie years ago...

By the way - I highly recommend this museum to anyone who happens to be passing. I forget the name of it. There is one that is right by the bridge that I think is the official government museum... I wouldn't bother with that one. This one is a couple of kilometres away and is far superior, very informative, well done, and touching.

My uncle told me when he was living in Hawaii. Where he was getting a degree in something about brain chemistry that I can't pronounce.
