Great movie, and the characters in this film deserve an update to their story.
It would be interesting if they somehow got mixed up again.
Or even better, if Jim stalks Flick to take his revenge on her, finds her doing something highly illigal, but obviously winds up losing once again. Possibly a long jail sentence this time for him.
Or not, and he finally manages to take his revenge on that cunt!
The only caveat with this idea is that the studio probably couldn't get Alexandery Payne to direct it, which would be a key aspect to recapturing the tone and underlying dark humor he's so good at. I say this because he's been approached to do sequels to his other movies like About Schmidt and Sideways but didn't like the script or the original story (Sideways' sequel novel "Vertical" was not as good).
If they did run with this idea it probably wouldn't be executed as well just like 99% of the sequels being shelled out today.
But maybe he would like the idea of reprising this world, since these characters were more in a story driven movie than the movies you mentioned, and the first movie clearly left off with things continuing for them (I mean, they didn't have an "ever after" ending like Sideways).
Hey, just another idea: since Flick's working for a senator at the end, an obvious theme could be yet another election that she's running for using all sorts of dirty tricks, and Jim tries to sabotage once again.
A 20 years after movie would be great....if the same script writers, director and actors are available.
Maybe not a revenge straight on, but something of a confluence of events/modern media (Google does not forget)/old wounds open type of thing....with a little revenge.
What do you mean by that?
I was thinking more like Jim is leading his mediocre, 30m2 studio life, when he loses his job because of her political decisions. Or even better, he unjustly blames it on her (like the janitor condemned him for throwing something on the floor).
She then is running for a higher office, like senator, and he manages to be in a position to stop her once and for all, like he learns something terrible about her past. Or even better, he is able to fabricate something terrible, even if he knows it's not true.
He wants to use it but has to figure out a way to do so, since he would be unbelievable given their past. But he figures a strategy that would work by manouvering an innocent idiot.
But anyway, the main conflict is about him, mediocre and with his life destroyed, vs her, slimy and crafty and successful, but at this point he will take his revenge at any cost.
I think the audience has great empathy for Mr.M. He has a moral compass, but made a few bad choices, which elicits the empathy. If you turn him into a revenge machine, you will lose that audience empathy for the character.
The moral/ethic question was at the 💓 of this movie and the central character. A sequel would have to be along those lines.
I am sure that Hollywood has some scripts floating around a sequel.
It would have to be good enough for the main 🌟 to agree to do.
Yes, you have a very valid point there.
Than I guess your idea of confluence is better, like their destiny brings them in another situation like Election, where he has a chance to stop her.
But I could also go with my idea of changing him a bit after 20 years, afterall in Election he has quite a nice life, and it gets ripped apart by his bad choices but also by her lies. He ends up quite a loser, dealing with his new reality by ignoring her and people like her.
So if he gets pushed around some more, he might take some stronger action against them. He fits the bill for someone going full postal, if you ask me.
Yes, he would stop being our "hero" for being a nice guy, but wouldn't we sympathize with him for being right and for taking some action against people like her?
Kinda like in "Falling Down": he's the little guy that won't take it anymore.
I love this movie, but the idea of a sequel never even occurred to me until I saw this thread. Now that I'm thinking about it, I see all kinds of potential and I think that could actually be really great. Nice idea!
