What part of this movie was a comedy? SPOILERS
I can't remember a single funny part in this movie; honestly I couldn't even tell if they were trying. All the scenes are bland, nothing really happens, and to be honest it was mostly a drama, a very, very bland drama. It's like the director went out and said "let's make the feel-bad film of the year!" It's about as funny as Basquiat.
Sadly, most of the characters do seem very real but almost none of them have anything to say or any purpose in anything they do. Really the fact that the characters seem real is a really depressing part of the movie because none of the characters had any redeeming qualities.
Luke Wilson is David, an "artist" who moonlights as a pot dealer; well, honestly he daylights as they hardly ever even acknowledge his artwork, mostly just that he had the weed.
Alica Witt is Serena, a compulsive liar that rebels against everything she wants and overall just comes off as a bratty bitch. David likes Serena; Serena likes David but neither face it, obviously the point in the movie. In one scene David tells Serena exactly what will happen if she goes to New York with the musician Tommy. She knows Tommy is crazy and just can't face that David is right; of course upon arrival she begins to hate Tommy, leaves him for a guy she just meets in a diner who turns out to be homeless and she still stays with him. She then lies to Jennifer about how her life is doing and invites her out for Fenton's party (oooh the infamous Fenton!) Of course they go and she goes upstairs with Fenton who proceeds to drug and viciously rapes her to which is brushes it off and acts like nothing happened and of course it is never even mentioned again.
Brittany Murphy is Mary, a girl David pseudo-dates in that they hang out and have sex up until he takes her to Devlin's for a camping "trip." Basically it's blankly alluded to that she ditches David and to have sex with Devlin although upon dropping David off she seems like she still wants to date David?
Jack Black is Devlin, a character that is apparently front cover worthy even though he has what one? two scenes? Where you can tell the director basically said "...be...Jack Black!" Singing, giggling, random *beep* philosophy, and gibberish ensues for a short time before being broken by another depressing scene or two. Oh yeah, he's such a cool dude! He gave everyone super-awesome acid! Then (most likely) banged his guest's date! What a guy.
Amy Locane is Jennifer, a girl that can't decide between being a bitch or being an airhead. She's sometimes the stupid blonde; other times she's the responsible friend; then she bangs David even though she knows Serena deep down wants him and even pushes for them to get together. They never even address how the situation is set up or why she is doing it or if she feels regret? Was it a revenge-bang? Was she just trying to prove a point? Did she forget?...Seriously three quarters of the scenes in this movie feel like filler.
Jeremy Sisto is Robert and Andy Dick is Tony, a gay couple that basically play as the "adults" in the movie in a weird way. Robert is the responsible masculine homosexual and Tony is the most stereotypically feminine homosexual. Andy, like Jack, seems to just basically act like every other part he's basically done and it never comes off well sadly.
Jamie Kennedy is Tommy the schizophrenic musician that is pretty much the only even-slightly funny character in the movie; and once again with just a few scenes, granted they were pretty annoying scenes.
You have Luke Wilson, Jack Black, Andy Dick, Scott Caan, and JAMIE KENNEDY is the funny one, how the hell does that work?
