well i think serena freakn ruined it for me. everything she did made me want to choke her. i was pissed that david ended up with her bc she was just so freaking selfish. i mean she was a bad friend, a liar, a manipulator, didn't have a job, used people and didnt care about them. am i alone on this? i love all the other characters just not hers. she made me dislike the movie bc shes in it so much which pisses me off bc i would have liked the it.
So you would never watch a film about Hitler starring your favourite actor and directed by your favourite director because you wouldn't enjoy it. I think that is a very shallow approach to film.
I agree with ispeakcar. In essence he's talking about a movie's relevance to him as an individual. In this case he's expressing how he relates to Serena. If characters in a film possess mindsets I don't dig, I'll probably lose interest. There are exceptions. For example Hitler does not interest me, but I enjoyed Der Untergang. His actor was killer, and the experiences of those disillusioned Germans within a crumbling Berlin after believing German victory was imminent intrigued me at the time. However, for the most part, I enjoy films that somehow reflect experiences I currently possess. Therefore, a character's decisions and motivations will play a major role in my consideration of most films, and is a reason why I can dig ispeakcar's angle.
Regardless of your approach to films, it always stems from personal relevance, whether it be an interest in the acting, admiration for a character, or excitement over the camera work. Your system for determining whether such an aspect is idiotic, shallow or deep doesn't have an inherent existence in reality. It's simply an approach you've constructed that is solely relevant to you, which is essentially where ispeakcar is coming from.
Concerning Serena, I think it was that "bitchiness" that intrigued David. He was unsatisfied with his life and Serena represented a much different approach than his laid back, passive nature. Perhaps he thought his way wasn't getting him exactly where he wanted to be. Hooking up with Serena is his exploration of other ways.
I admit I never understood why some people have to indentify or like at least one character to like a movie. I think mostly women are like that. I guess I just have to respect it and accept, but it is not easy. I didn't mean anything insulting when I used the term "shallow", what I had in mind is that a film can be very interesting and/or instructive, or have worth and quality even if it doesn't have any character you like, characters aren't necessarily the most important thing in films, and I can't help but feel that you are missing something if you are like that. At least don't say the film is bad, just say you are not able to like it, it's different.
Wonderfully put. You should post this on every movie board on IMDB. It might cut down on a helluva lot of nitpicking and trolling from the masses.
Seriously, though, very well thought out and nice of you to come to the OPs aid. It's not always easy to express yourself on these threads. Our "voices" are very difficult to express in black and white type.
I personally wish for a specific font that is identified as sarcasm but the frat boys haven't yet come up with one. Ah, well, such is life...
thanks sendgoodstuff, i wasnt explaining my view point correctly and you made it a little clearer. i dont judge all movies on whether i like the characters or not, some you arent suppose to like and others you are suppose to love. this specific character, serena, just was one of those characters that got under my skin. i was wondering if someone else was bothered by her as well. i get now that she was the perfect match for the guy, but i still just didnt like her. i thought he could do better. maybe it was a mix of the character and the acress portraying her. then i thought- if she was suppose to be that annoying and manipulative- the actress actually did a wonderful job. i mean for me to really dislike her character, you would have to do a good job, right>? oh well.
"if she was suppose to be that annoying and manipulative- the actress actually did a wonderful job. i mean for me to really dislike her character, you would have to do a good job, right>? oh well."
If it is the characyer and not the actor that's irritating, then yes, of course!!!
the issue i had was the ending. as mentioned they've done a good job if i'm convinced into disliking serena's character, but she was meant to be some serial crazy hypocritical liar all the way through...and then the aliens show up. turns out she wasn't a liar...but that was her character...
*beep* aliens man and wats with these over interested cops comin up on roof tops n *beep* what did they get a noise complaint for the party? they busted the place like it was a highschool party
