whats the big deal about this movie?

I don't understand the hype with this movie. Julia Roberts seems stiff and wooden in her line delivery, the dialogue seems forced, Hugh Grant can't get a single coherent line out because he's always mumbling, and there is no chemistry at all between the two leads. I'm not troling, this is just my honest opinion of the movie. I feel that there are a ton of movies from 1999 that are so much better such as The Bachelor, Never Been Kissed, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Mummy, Forces of Nature, (or heck) even Runaway Bride was better than this.

The movies you mention are indeed fine movies. What is the big deal with "Notting Hill"? I'm not sure, but it still is one of my favorites to re-watch. It has charm and humor, with interesting characters. I think Grant and Roberts play their characters just right. And Spike is one of the most interesting characters in ay movie. It's OK if you don't "get it" for this one, there are lots of choices and there is no one movie that everyone likes.

I absolutely agree. To me it seems very much your typical chick flick but it all seems very forced. Very wooden acting indeed. Hugh Grant's character just rambles at times and I find myself saying "STFU" out loud. I can see why women buy into it because it's incredible. Meaning, without credit. Not often is it that the guy wants the girl more than vice versa. I rated this rather low but the roommate character gives it some slight appeal. The only thing I got from the film was she was uptight and he was hung up. So many better films from 1999. So many better Julia Roberts movies.

I totally agree. I found it incredibly boring and predictable. Lackluster performance from Julia Roberts and fumbling performance (not in a good way) from Hugh Grant.
