Who Was Big Time?

Did he want Jesus to give him money if Jesus does go anywhere or was he really helping out Jesus? It seemed that he mostly just gave Jesus some real world advice, though he did brag about protecting him. He never really asked for anything from Jesus unlike Jesus' uncle, girlfriend, the agent, his coach, etc. Speaking of the coach, howcome the coach was so concerned with knowing where Jesus went? Was the coach planning on leaking out the info to reporters for money or something?

i think so ! if he was willing to give jesus a bonus to make up his mind faster , the coach was going to get something out of it !!!!

I never really understood who big time was and how he had all of this advice to give to Jesus.

You're read too much into it. Big Time was a local drug dealer/hustler that held sway over that section of Coney Island. He talked to Jesus because he's seen that story play out many times over. He's seen the great athletes stumble over roadblocks like drugs, violence, and sex before they could make it to the big leagues and just wanted to give him a heads up. He didn't ask for anything from Jesus because he had everything he wanted already.
He who is without sin, go find some. We can't wait all night.

His character was kind of a mystery. I guess he was portrayed to be like a mafioso/godfather type. He was supposed to be the neighborhood know-it-all, benefactor, protector, pimp, teacher all wrapped in one. He was someone who had all the answers and was untouchable, but along with his realness he tried to give good moral advice. I guess you could say he was the surrogate big brother of Coney Island.

At the end of the movie, when the orator reads Jesus' final declaration in the gym, telling what school he would attend, Big time says, to someone on the phone, "this sh-t is bogus, the boy did not go for the buck." The last word of that quotation is the only one that I have in question but that is pretty much what he said.

So he had something invested in Jesus' choice, it's just not stated exactly what.

Another thing people haven't mentioned was how he took Sip, Jesus's teammate on his high school team, on a ride basically trying to get on his good side in the epilogue like he did with Jesus. Based on that, I assume Big Time was a small time sports gambler or something like that. He probably looked at dudes like Jesus and Sip as investments.
