One of my favorite scenes in "He Got Game" is when Jesus Shuttlesworth was being wooed and courted by the high priced sports agent. And the dude asks "so much does your watch cost?" Jesus says "$89.95." To which the agent replied "you see my watch, this cost me $36,000 dollars, "That is like having a Corvette on your wrist." Now I have two questions regarding this scene: 1. Does anybody have any idea as to what was the make/model of his watch? 2. What brand and model of any mens wrist watch would have cost that insane price in 1998? I have never owned such a pricey watch. I'm a Casio G-Shock man. Have never paid more than $89.99 for one. PS I know that Breitling and Rolex are so pricey though $36,000.00 in 1998 must have seemed like such an insane retail price for any mens watch! Just my opinion.
Men's watch is one of the most luxurious goods for men, the price doesn't fluctuate like houses or other stuff. Rolex is a great brand but not even considered the most top-notch brands in this industry. For businessmen, watches are status symbols. High status businessmen don't care too much about suits and ties cuz they cost a few thousands tops. But watches are not.
Sometimes under certain circumstances, men ought to wear watches of similar levels. Like a chairmen and CEOs meeting, if 4 of the 5 ppl are wearing Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Hublot, and the other 1 of them is wearing a Seiko, unless there is some kind of reason behind it, it would be considered inappropriate. And those top watches could easily cost more than $30,000. Those high status businessmen normally own watch(es) worth over $100,000. And lots of them are so into it and collect them just like you collecting Casio G-Shocks. Some rare and top brand watches could cost more than $1,000,000. And we are not even talking about pocket watches.
There are only a handful of greatest brands and they are so expensive because the technique of making them is so unique and there aren't many guys who're capable or qualified of making them. And they don't really make tons of them each year.
When you're talking about something like "price in 1998", that's for the majority of the society. The wealthiest ppl are always multimillionaires and billionaires so they don't see the prices as others do. So luxury good like watches always have prices that stick with these customers' worth. Its market is not that big but quite stable.
That agent who talked to Jesus wasn't even one of the richest guy. So if he can afford a $36,000 watch, think about how much his bosses would pay.
Thanks for your well worded explanation of mens wristwatches. I don't know anybody who owns a really expensive watch. And like you said I love Casio G-Shocks. Yes I have heard of Patek Phillipe & Hublot though not that other brand you've mentioned. Breitling which is endorsed by actor John Travolta is quite a nice brand and so pricey. And I see that Tiger Woods wears and endorses Tag-Heur though am not so impressed with the brand.

If that dude can really afford a $36,000 watch then he needs to get a nicer house. Seriously that house is probably 5 million, you shouldnt be wearin a watch like that unless you can afford a 50 million dollar house.
That sports agent's house was a huge mansion! And I thought it was very cool with awesome architecture and don't forget the swimming pool too. It most likely cost a few million bucks to own and he was single without any kids so in my opinion the mansion was most likely his dream home. He could more than likely have afforded a larger home though didn't need one. And with his huge salary and commissions from his clients then he was being somewhat frugal by owning that platinum Rolex. Personally even if I were wealthy I wouldn't spend that insane price for any wristwatch for myself! I like Casio G-Shocks and Breitling.
