Im torn on Denzel's teaching

On the first part I totally agree with how hard he was on his son. On the second part IT WAS his son and a child. I have kids and would never be that rough on them.

I used to do pro wrestling and please im not trying to say im awesome or argue the wrestling verse sports argument. But I was the best in my training facility. Plus my trainer said I reminded him of the best worker he ever faced.. Shawn Michaels. ) Because of that the trainers would have me take the newcomers under my wing. I would be pretty much be as harsh as Denzel came off in this movie. Work with them and call them out on all of their mistakes. Unlike the movie tho after class I would talk to them all friendly. Sometimes not too friendly.

However if I was training my own son. I am still torn. There is a thing about wanting to be a loving father and wanting him to be the best he can be. Are you doing your best by being loving or setting him up better for the future.

I wont put my son in the business but it has always made me wonder how I would be in that situation.

I think Jake knew what he was doing. If Jake wasn't hard on Jesus, he wouldn't have grown up to be the player and person he is.

never went full pro in a sense. but im from malden ma. Same place HHH was trained. Trained by the guy who got him in the business. Not Kowalski but the guy who got him in, who also worked for the wwf for 10 years. I didn't go pro because I had a kid along the way and got married. Im not lying I was really good. I was sort of a trainer. I taught all the new people coming in to get them up and ready. Whenever drills were going on I would take people aside and work with them.

And yes I would be blunt with them. not harsh just blunt. I still think if it was my son tho, I would be much more tough on him than anyone.

Thats how greatness is born... Michael Jackson's dad was a jerk, Mozart's dad was a jerk, Tiger Wood's father was a jerk. Mayweather's father was a jerk....

You seeing a common theme here? And guess what, in other parts of Michaels', Mozarts, Tiger's, and Mayweather lives... one could point out that they are personally flawed people... and you may be right... but they reached the absolute pinnacle of their craft.

Which is more important? All these people will be remembered for eternity.

There are just as many greats who's fathers weren't jerks and who are not personally flawed people. So no, I'm not seeing a common theme.

Surely there's a way to instill discipline into your kids and still be a loving and understanding father.

But at the end of the day, it all comes down to what is most important to you between your son's potential future success in sports and you wanting to be a good father with a happy son. Will you sacrifice ambition for happiness or happiness for ambition? That's i suppose the struggle all fathers have to face and the majority of them choose a more or less healthy mix of both.

All that being said, let's not forget the uncertainty element inherent to all human activity whereby the kids sometimes turn out to become someone totally unexpected given their environment and against all odds, for better or worse. May it be a genius in the slums or a sadistic serial killer in a loving family of doctors/teachers/scholars etc. Sometimes, there's just nothing you can do, but i do believe those cases are rare and a parent should never stop trying anyway.

People who don't like their beliefs being laughed at shouldn't have such funny beliefs

Pushing hard to help them succeed is fine, pushing hard physically on children and women is obviously not.
