Does not make my A list ... but it is a good movie
The Cider House Rules presents a number of issues and doesn't much attention to any of them. The viewer is left to their own feelings. You've got abortion, infidelity, murder and a boy struggling to become a man in an environment that demands decisive thinking.
Tobey McGuire plays Homer Wells who is raised in an orphanage and the resident doctor trains him to be an obstetrician. Then Homer meets Candy (Charlize Theron) the wife of a soldier who goes off to war and in his absence the flirtatious Candy seduces the rather naive Homer. The end result is infidelity.
The movie doesn't end there it adds more issues and for me too many making this movie slow down. On a positive note the movie is replete with seasoned actors such as Michael Caine as the good doctor, Kathy Baker and Jane Alexander playing nurses and Charlize Theron as the unfaithful soldier's wife.
The Cider House Rules did hit a high note when it came to the Oscars. It received a couple for Best Supporting Role (Caine) and Best Writing (Screenplay based on a book).
