Cider House Rules v Vera Drake

"Are they made from real Girl Scouts?"

Well I thought Vera Drake was ok but just foussed on the one main character's storyline, and we only saw a few month's worth of the characters' lives. It was also an improvised peice, and doesn't have the range of moral issues and things that CHR deals with.

I really loved Vera Drake - It pulled at the heart-strings and was so haunting.

Imelda Staunton is a fabulous actress with a great range.

Vera Drake by a country mile. No judgmental overtones, no political bent, no attempted manipulation of the audience's opinions besides simple and unpretentious storytelling.

I like Cider House Rules, but Lasse Hallstrom wouldn't know subtlety if it smacked him upside the head.

I love both movies. I'm a big Mike Leigh fan. I love his films. But I liked The Cider House Rules a lot more. I liked Vera Drake, but I felt cold & empty after it. I know it was supposed to, but it was really bleak. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was great. Imelda Staunton was excellent. But it didn't feel happy at all. The Cider House Rules really affected me. It was so emotional, & everything about it is perfect.
