As a comedy actor De Niro did a good job and i got quite a few laughs from his performance. I found his crying attempts funny because they were so badly performed. Maybe it was meant to be acted like this or perhaps just seeing De niro cry made me laugh, because i didn't know how to respond to his unconventional role.

I'm sure he meant his crying to be like that, if you watch "The Deer Hunter" and "Raging Bull" you can see his acting is good when it comes to crying !

His crying was hilarious! Yes, I too am sure is was meant to be a "fraud".

I think the crying was meant to be real. This was a comedy of sorts so the delivery would be played for laughs instead of trying to make us cry with him.
