Season 19 is the worst season of South Park

I know this is subjective, but I grew up with South Park, and I honestly think Season 19 is garbage. It actually got to the point where I stopped watching it.

South Park started as a show about four friends. Even though there often was a sociopolitical message, it was, first and foremost, a show about kids dicking around and getting into funny situations. There are no longer kids-being-kids plotlines. The characters (and, in turn, the show's charm) have gave way entirely to the message. They are really just vehicles now for what Matt and Trey are trying to tell us, sometimes to the extent where they deliver monologues without any real context (thinking Jimmy in the ad episode). I miss episodes where they built treehouses, played games, had crazy schemes, and did other normal kid things. There has always been that South Park twist with the celebrity cameos and the message weaved in, but Season 19 is just the message, episode after episode, being hammered into my head, and it's rarely funny.

I understand that there's a meta-aspect to this, that perhaps Matt and Trey are saying society is so PC now that it's preventing people like them from being funny (hence Cartman's transformation from a devious sadist to a whiny bitch). But the resulting season felt very overt, very forced, and was seldom funny.

In my opinion, the peak of South Park was seasons 3-10, episodes like Scott Tenorman Must Die, Good Times With Weapons, Casa Bonita, ManBearPig, the LOTR episode. It just pains me that people think Season 19 is one of the best, because the show has deviated so far from what made it work. As someone who has been a fan for over 10 years (and has watched back to season 1 even though I was only 5 when it first aired), I just really think South Park has jumped the shark.

It's your opinion and you're entitled to it.

19. Season 14 (2010)

South Park found itself at the center of perhaps its biggest controversy ever during Season 14, but controversy doesn’t necessarily equate to quality. And when you take away the censorship fiasco surrounding the images of Muhammad in 200 and 201, the episodes just aren’t that good. Are they important, and did Comedy Central prove South Park’s point about freedom of expression by kowtowing to threats of retribution? Yes. But are they even close to South Park’s best? Absolutely not.

Unfortunately, that’s a theme that pervades Season 14. The season’s other multi-parter, centered on the boys’ superhero alter egos, tries way too hard and ends up without either a compelling plot or an abundance of hilarity. The Coon and Friends trilogy and 200-201 take up nearly half the season and don’t come close to pulling that weight. And the other nine episodes, despite the occasional funny moment, fail to take up the slack. The low points of this season are borderline unwatchable: Insheeption ranks among the least remarkable episodes in the show’s history.

Best Episode: Medicinal Fried Chicken

Worst Episode: Insheeption

Looking back on Season 14, it was a weaker one, but "Medicinal Fried Chicken","Crippled Summer", and "Poor and Stupid" were still funnier than any episode in Season 19. I realize this is subjective and I don't usually like opinion-y threads, but I just don't understand how people think Season 19 is one of the best (i.e. better than or equal to seasons 5-10).

Hmmmm, you have been on IMDB for only 2 days and yet you say that you "don't usually like opinion-y threads." Sad troll. plonk!

He just wants people to agree/disagree with him even though it's neutral so far. 

I dunno. I thought the episode where Randy keeps trying to buy stuff at the Whole Foods and keeps getting hammered to donate to Starving Children in Africa was ****ing hilarious.

reply

Oh......I actually really liked season 14 haha

Their connection between PC culture, gentrification, and smart ads is absurdly funny and brilliant at the same time.

I completely agree with the O.P. I miss the days when South Park was about the adventures of the four main boys, but now all Matt and Trey do is parrot what they see on the news. It's not clever, it's not funny. It's lazy

reply

It's social commentary.

Go and vote Trump you ignoramous!

I agree with the OP. The show used to be so much more.

Whatever happened to American Dad? I only keep seeing new episodes of Family Guy but nothing AD. :-/

Suppose its audience prefers a shítty show that revolves around stupid flashbacks and toilet humour than an actual decent show (American Dad).

reply

New episodes of American Dad start January 25th. It's been on TBS for a year now.

Also, South Park fans have no business blasting other shows for using toilet humor.

Remember kids, dressing up like Hitler in school isn't cool!

reply

Even though it's on TBS it's still better than that piece of shít known as Family Guy.

Anyway, thanks for the release date. Almost there. 

reply

Yes! American Dad is so much better than family guy

I would say s19 was an improvement on the crap of s12-s18

You could tell Stone and Parker actually had some passion. It wasn't amazing but it was an improvement.

TBH there aren't many episodes post s10 that are worth re watching.

The List
Margaritaville
Grounded Vindaloop and
Safe Space.

That's it. Everything else is just mediocre or just seems like a parody of itself.

The character Reality was a way of allowing them to express their feelings towards how fúcked the society is now with PCs, SJWs, Feminists and whatnot.

Plants and animals change and adapt over time, so do tv shows.
yeah, there aren't any more dinosaurs but there are humans. It's a fair trade off

reply

Yea, it kinda sucked, to be honest. At least in the context of the high standards that I generally place on this, my overall favorite comedy show. Definitely the worst season, in my view.
