Palpatine is a underrated villian

He kinda reminds me of the devil in the fact there's absolutely no good in him. He's pure evil. And how he just twists, and seduces Anakin into the dark side then smiling in the end when he breaks him by telling him about Padme. Truly a great horrible villain. One we haven't seen in a long time.

I love him! He's far and away the best thing about the prequels, so clever and devious and able to fool everyone all of the time.

I do love an intelligent bad guy, like Palpatine and Tywin Lannister.

“Seventy-seven courses and a regicide, never a wedding like it!

reply

Yeah I agree. The prequels were NOT PERFECT. But they had one hell of a bad guy. Movies nowadays can't even do that anymore!

so clever and devious and able to fool everyone all of the time.

only because everyone else are brain-dead morons.

"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"

reply

Besides the fact that the plan only worked because every character was brain dead, his plan depended way too much on chance. There were elements that he had no control of, however were necessary for his plan to work.

Everything went right for Palpatine, even when it seemed like the good guys were winning, he actually won. Heck, even in the old EU he never died in the Death Star shaft, he came back 7 years later in a cloned body and unleashed the Eclipse-class Super Star Destroyer, World Devastators, and TIE/D Fighters upon the galaxy. Mon Calamari never saw it coming!

reply

Wow I never read those. Have to check them out. That sounds pretty cool.

reply

Yeah, definitely check out Dark Empire, Dark Empire II, and Empire's End. Good comics! The dialogue in there is more relevant to the OT than Disney's Star Wars Rebels could ever hope to be.

reply

Ian McDiarmid is far and away the best thing about this movie.

reply

Agreed. Palpatine makes this movie brilliant - and I cannot understand why he gets so little attention from Star Wars fans in general.

Palpatine believes himself to be the savior of the galaxy and there is some good in him. He just seems like the villain because Star Wars is told from a rebel's aka traitor's perspective.

1. The Jedi did attempt to illegally assassinate the chancellor. However much they disagreed with the chancellor, they should have went through legal processes to address their issues.

2. The Jedi supported a war. War is never something the Jedi should support. Ever.

3. Palpatine ended the war and brought peace and justice to the galaxy.

4. Palpatine desired to save the life of Padme and would have if Yoda didn't interfere.

5. Palpatine was minding his own business in his office when Yoda trespassed and committed assault on the royal guards. They didn't do anything to him.

6. Palpatine's killing of Mace Windu, and the other Jedi, was purely self defense.

7. Palpatine loves democracy, but had to put that love aside for the greater good. Selfless action to be sure.

8. Palpatine saved his young friend, Darth Vader's life. He could have easily left him there to die.

9. Palpatine is never mean to non-Jedi throughout the entire saga. In fact he only gets angry with Jedi and respects everyone else. The closest Palpatine comes to being angry with non-Jedi is when he was apparently "displeased" with lack of progress on Death Star II. However, Vader may have been lying to cover his own

10. Palpatine helped Anakin save Obi Wan's life.

Critical Fans of the prequels regularly admit that Palpatine is a good thing in the Prequels. So I would not say he was underrated.

He is a great character. One of the best in all the films.

reply

He is probably one of my favorite characters in the franchise.

He kinda reminds me of the devil in the fact there's absolutely no good in him.

This is debatable. Palpatine is certainly responsible for the deaths of the Jedi and anyone involved in the unnecessary clone wars, but he brought about drastic changes to the government. Do we have any proof that the Republic was better than the Empire he created? Most likely it is, but thats not guaranteed.

His view on the Force always seemed more rational to me than the Jedi also. To be a Jedi, it seems like you have to suppress and ignore a lot of powerful feelings like anger and sadness and love. This seems like a very easy way to turn yourself into a ticking time bomb. Feeding off of your anger doesnt seem healthy, but accepting it and overcoming it does.

He said he wants the Sith to rule the galaxy, but the Sith became rulers of the galaxy as soon as he was elected chancellor. He won. Everything he did after that was completely pointless and caused unnecessary problems for himself.

That goes hand in hand with the other thing that bothered me: He 100% controlled two massive military entities, and rather than combine them he voluntarily terminated a massive portion of his potential military power.
