This movie takes place in 1985 but was made in 1998, and it seems like the 13 year difference is huge and that 1985 is a displayed as a completely foreign territory from 98' (which it kind of is). But it's weird that it's 2011 now and we're 13 years away from when this movie came out in 1998, yet 1998 and this movie don't even seem that old. Of course technology has changed a lot since then, but certainly not as big of a cultural difference I think then with 1985 and 1998 (yet still the same amount of time). Just a random slightly OT thought.

What do you think that means?

Let's look at that pattern:

1998-2011 minimal difference
1985-1998 greater difference
1972-1985 vast difference
1959-1972 phenomenal difference
1946-1959 vast difference
1933-1946 smaller difference

SO I ask, when societal change becomes less recognizable is that an indication of a society in need of change or one comfortable in the changes that have taken place?

Or a fear of change?

It is weird, but the pattern of society says it all

I guess if we look again from 2011 to 2024 its going to be different, but not all that different maybe new technology and stuff like that who knows :)

I have to disagree that 1933-1946 was a small difference. The 1930s was a decade of depression in the US, but in Europe it introduced stunningly elegant & sexy clothes. I would say this was the most sensually revealing decade. Have you seen the type of clothing being made of this time? They also carried over the shorter boyish hair from the 20s, except it's curled. Their eyebrows were very thin, almost shaved & a long curved line was drawn in its place, compared to the thicker, more natural brows of the 40s. This decade also didn't have much censorship in movies unlike the 40s.

The 40s was the complete opposite of the 30s, where 30s was soft drapes & elegance, the 40s was boxed big shoulder pads, even more simpler clothes & work shoes, almost workforce uniform types. The hair became more natural, longer, less curls. The brassieres we see today was 1st introduced or molded in this decade, hard busty bras that held the boobs in place compared to the loose tops 'bras' or no-bra of the 30s. The censorship was in place, this was a more rigid & less sensual decade, marked perhaps because of the War, WW2.

Comparing 1998 to now: Some things are quite similar. Some big changes. Most of all, a lot of subtle differences.

The longer you get away from a decade, the more different/changeful it seems.

I know what you mean,
i think of music today and what music was like in 1998,not that different,i think fashon hasn't changed much snce either,but 1985 to 1998 is quite a huge culture jump.

Yeah it is
I mean i watch alot of old 80's films and its so different
My family used to record things ALOT
So i watched alot of Old 80's movies and music videos it is really different
I don't know about how life was life back then, but i am sure they made huge changes my mom said everything was better when they made the change, but i never knew what she meant until now

A couple of other movies had the same premise....

American Graffiti 1973 set in 1962

Dazed and Confused 1993 set in 1976

All 3 movies show what huge changes in style, fashion, customs/attitudes and music we went through in a relatively short amount of time.

Things have changed drastically since 1998. Even moreso than the years in between 1985 and 1998. It's a combination of rose-tinted nostalgia, getting older and out of touch and perhaps growing slightly bitter that makes you think things haven't changed much.

Pay a little more attention and live in the now. It ain't 1998 any more.
