What happened to the pilot?...

I can't believe someone hasn't asked this question, BUT after the plane crash, where is the pilot. There's wreakage, fire and the 4 passengers without a scratch, but WHERE's THE PILOT? Is he dead, did he walk away, what, what, what?...

I always assumed that the pilot (and co-pilot) were meant to have died in the crash.
