Why the low rating?

Only 6/10.

I think it's easily an 8/10.

And 15 years on it still gives me the shivers. Great film.

Average action movie. James Woods was horribly miscast here. Jack Crow (according to John Steakly's Vampire$) is huge, muscular, and young; three main points that Woods is not. Oddly enough, Daniel Baldwin was great as his sidekick.

Be that as it may, a movie is not a book, and Woods is gloriously profane and wonderfully ornery as the cinematic Jack Crow. I think it's one of his best performances, and it sure didn't have to be -- a leather-jacketed vampire killer in a low budget John Carpenter movie? He could've phoned it in and no one would've complained.

The thing is I don't think I would've liked this movie half as much if it didn't have James Woods being so....well....James Woods. His profanity laced anger-spewing performance was glorious from start to finish.

reply

Because people who have read the book know how badly they butchered it.

reply

IDK. This movie is pretty kick-ass imo. 8/10 for me.

reply

Yeah, I'd personally give it a 7.5 or 8. I don't know how much of that is nostalgia though. And it is a little dated, which adds some charm to it in my opinion. If I were to see it for the first time today I might not enjoy it as much. But I first saw it in the theater when I was a teenager, and when I bought my first DVD player when they first came out, one of my first DVDs was Vampires, so I'm a little biased.

Needs more Sheryl Lee, so 7/10

An actress of her caliber, all they did was slap her around and didn't give her much to do, otherwise, I'd have given an 8/10.

reply

My main complaint was their treatment of Katrina. Did they really have to keep smacking her around?

I agree, I gave it a 10/10 as an excellent movie. It should be between 7.1-7.6 ratings.

There's something wrong with Esther.
