Would have been an interesting twist if...

...after we meet Sheryl Lee's character at the party we discover that she's actually the master. I thought that's where the story was headed (for some reason I thought I'd read that she was the lead villain in this film), and was admittedly a bit disappointed when it went the more conventional route.

agreed.Thought that would be the twist

But if he did that, he wouldn't get to treat her in such a misogynistic manner. I recently read the book this is based on, & the female characters aren't treated in such a disgusting way. I do recall (I think it was in the book John Carpenter: Prince of Darkness), that he had her tied naked to the bed, just to cater to horny teenagers, or something to that effect.

Yeah, no real reason to add to the plot, or non existent character development. John Steakley was able to do this idea without abusing his female characters like in this film. Carpenter is just a pig.

Interesting - don't really know much about Carpenter personally, or the apparently strong antipathy towards him (I take it that is not a favorable biography). I do recall hearing a Sheryl Lee interview in which she said that some of the directors she worked for "were not the nicest people" (and she usually seems to have pretty nice things to say about everyone). Wonder if she was thinking of him...

My expectations were exactly like the OP's. I also thought beforehand, judging from some of Vampires' promotional photos, that Lee's character would be the main antagonist. Unfortunately Lee's character was nothing more than a plot device to serve Crow's mission, therefore having no depth whatsoever. It was a shame since Lee would have been able to portray a character with a dark persona, evident in her prominent portrayal of Laura Palmer.

I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not.

Lol what? John Carpenter had strong female leads in Halloween, The Fog, Ghosts Of Mars, Assault On Precinct 13, and Starman and is a frequent collaborator and celebrator of women in Hollywood, but because one film has a woman being naked in a screenplay he didn't write means he hates women? I really hope you don't have any authority over anything with a stupid mindset like that.

Uhmm you say that the film hinted that Sheryl Lee was the master but then it turned out that she wasn't. I thought that too from the way it was setting Woods up with her.

That is a twist.

A twist is when the movie hints at something but does something else.
