This is one Star Trek movie that's unfairly criticized

First off, there's no way anyone can intelligently argue that Star Trek: Insurrection, is a movie deserving to be ranked below Star Trek V: The Final Frontier or Star Trek: Nemesis. Both of those movies were terrible and no amount of acting could save poorly conceptualized plots.

Insurrection has a decent plot, good villains (Sona), intrigue and some of the better space battles I've seen in a Next Generation movie. Murray F Abraham's Ruaffo is not some zany, overboard bad guy but more of a calculated one who is driven of purpose. His motivations make sense at least, something you can't really say about Shinzon from Nemesis, who's motivations are nonsensical.

I think people have bought into this "every odd numbered ST movie is bad" nonsense. Star Trek 3: Search for Spock is a good movie and Star Trek: Insurrection is good too.

Truth be known, Star Trek: First Contact is highly overrated. They took the Borg (a great alien menace) and gave them a freaking queen! The main space battle lasted less than a minute and they employed the same, tired "time travel" plot device already used before in the original series and in Star Trek 4: The Journey Home.

Oh, and don't even get me started on the boatloads of human excrement that are the NEW Trek films, made by hack-in-chief J.J. Abrams. What shitty movies! Again, you can't intelligently argue that those are better movies than Star Trek: Insurrection. Don't forget, Star Trek: Into Darkness was voted as THE WORST Star Trek movie by super fans attending Trek conventions the year Into Darkness came out.

I'll give props to Insurrection any day over any of the others I've mentioned above.

Yeah, but to be fair, a good portion of Trek Con fans are the old guard who forgot to grow up (or learn to bathe). The reboot series has a broader appeal including young folks who aren't (yet) attending conventions in any significant numbers. In any case, fan and professional critical voting means nothing to me. My appreciation of a movie is determined by how I feel about it; I could not possibly care less what anyone else thinks of it.

That out of the way, I like the reboots even though I grew up watching TOS on Channel 11 NY since the 70s.

Doing a alternate time line is the only way they could advance the franchise without having a bunch of geeks screaming that something isn't canon. What I'm not happy about in the reboots is the new Spock. While the other characters do a great job of channeling the essence of the original characters, Spock is just too over the top and not logical. Not sure if that's a writing, directing, or acting issue.

But back to Insurrection: Hard to believe, but I finally saw Insurrection for the first time yesterday while I was waiting out a kidney stone. Maybe Insurrection wasn't as painful within the context of my situation but I thought it was decently done. Not my favorite of the franchise but if it's being maligned, it's probably unfair. At least no beloved character dies in this one. When it appears on TV I will watch it again.
