Why do people hate this movie for being a 'glorified tv episode'...

Yet like Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home? The only signifigant thing that happens is that kirk gets a new Enterprise at the VERY END.

or for that matter, why do people like First Contact for using a villian already milked for all it's worth in the TV series?

I don't think ST IV is a glorified TV episode. It's the continuation and culmination of a movie plot thread that started in ST II, and deals with the pretty significant issue of Earth being directly threatened. However, even if it were essentially just a glorified TV episode, then at least it was a fun one. Insurrection was like a glorified version of a boring episode. The only thing particularly memorable about it was a couple of gags: Smooth as an android's bottom and the 'boobs' scene specifically.

Concerning the Borg: they hadn't really been milked that hard prior to FC. If anything, they'd been built up gradually through the series as a significant threat and a major part of TNG continuity, which is especially significant when you think about how episodic the show was, so it was only logical they appear as movie villains for the TNG folks eventually. The milking didn't begin in earnest until Voyager overused them horribly, mainly because the studio hoped the borgs' popularity would help the ratings (hence Seven of Nine), but probably also because the writers were hacks who had trouble creating a new and compelling threat on a par with everyone's favourite cyborg zombies. They almost did it with Species 8472, but quickly dropped the ball with them too.

I found Insurrection to be no less fun than IV.

I remember people in the theatre laughing (as did I) at several points throughout the movie:

the Gilbert and Sullivan part, (as well as the follow-up when Data is reactivated)

"Definately feeling aggressive tendecies, sir!"

all the Riker and Troi scenes

the joystick

and "It may have something to do with the fact we have 3 minutes of air left"

and other things I personally liked were Jerry Goldsmith's score (I consider it tied for his best of the franchise, the other being the Motion Picture)

Picard and Anij's romance was well handled,

and how about that scene were Geordi sees a sunrise with his own eyes for the first time?

Why re explain it to you when you again when you didn't pay attention to the people who told you it is a "glorified tv episode" the first time?

Is it?

reply

yes, it is an extended episode, just like every other movie based on a TV show.

I don't hate it for being a glorified TV episode (which it is). I just think its rather uninteresting.

The Borg were milked by Voyager, not by TNG or First Contact.

They only appeared in a handful of episodes in TNG, for effect. Two one off appearances in season 2 and 5, and two cliffhangers (Best of Both Worlds, and Descent).

Voyager drove them into the ground, using them for every freaking season finale. They pussified and defanged them; like they did with other races too, like the Q, and even Species 8472. Species were a great villain, and they completely dropped the ball with them as well
