They visited the Briar Patch in Star Trek: Enterprise, which takes place several hundred years before Insurrection. It's made pretty clear that it's a dangerous part of space that is generally avoided.
shareIf a world like this was ever discovered and known to exist by the powers that be, one could only imagine the Galaxy fighting over it. This is something that could have been the biggest story event for the Next Generation, as the Genesis Project was for the Old Generation. It's too bad it turned into just another simple mission for Picard and his crew, though.

shareSure they extended life, i think McCoy was 120 when as Head Of StarFleet Medical he visited the Enterprise D on her inaugural voyage.. but of course he looked like *beep*
shareThe reason Dr McCoy lived so long was because in Star Trek 3 The Search for Spock he got possessed by Spock's soul for a brief period of time and for some reason that affected in DNA in a good way causing him to live longer than he otherwise would have.
shareDoubt that having Spocks katra would do anything to his DNA, its like saying someone would age differently if they were bi-polar... people are living linger with advanced medicine, and 200 years from now people will be living way longer than now.
