The deception would've failed

The Ba'ku are an intelligent people and surely have gazed at the stars and created star maps (with constellations). They would have been well aware of the clandestine move to another world. At least in TNG's "Homeward" episode they pay lip service to this fact when Worf tells the Boraalan villagers that "As we said, it is far from here. It will not be like the home you knew... even the stars may be different."

Once they got them on the other planet they wouldn't care if they were busted and even if they were, the Ba'ku would have no idea who did it. The deception was getting them on the holoship and keeping them in the there until they got to the new planet. There is no indication that it wouldn't have worked though if Data hadn't compromised the mission.
