Ending...

Why is there a ruby in the pillar at the end and what is the significance? My friend and I have been discussing it and can't figure it out. HELP

reply

The ruby ring belongs to the red haired soldier (Jayne Manheit) who Gary Sinise killed earlier and (presumably) buried in wet cement. It's not really a twist in the tale - just a macabre final touch.

I thought it was one of those homing devices that Sinise's crew wore - but a ruby ring works, too. We actually see the bodies being disposed of: after the boxer beats up Cage, he's left unconscious and alone with one guard. When he wakes up and drags himself away, the guard is busy putting the bagged bodies into the forms into which the concrete will be poured.

Yeah, its clear to me that the red head is IN the pillar.

Great touch, I like this movie, great escapism.

I was about to make a thread about this actually b/c i've wondered about it for years...

up until i read one of you saying it was the guy's gem, I had a seperate theory with no facts to back it up....i cant find a connection from the writes or the producers or the directors or even the actors from this movie to "wishmaster" where a simmilar ruby was found in some kind of statue...it's a huge stretch, but i was thinkin there was somthing to that for a while...until i realized how thin the assumption was and read this thread which enclosed the much more obvious conclusion...soo thanks..lol
