The plot is good, but the ending sucked. This is the major problem with all David Koep's scripts.
shareI strongly credit DePalma's direction and use of camera for the excitment the film makes you feel. He always makes you feel thrilled, although not all the time. He knows just when to make a scene catch you; there have been multiple DePalma movies I just about got tired of, but right before I ditched it, something made me stay, and always kept me interested. Then you watch it again, and often can pick up on subtle nuances and red herrings.

Yeah, I thought the same. I watched this film with very low expectations because of what I heard about it and I just came to be surprised. Very good movie, with an amazing direction, and highly underrated.
shareIf the entire film were as good as the opening 30-40 minutes, ´then´ it woulda been ´really good´. As it happens though, I very much agree with apparently every critic out there in that the second half of the thing just gets totally lazy, lame and hollow. There´s great deal of energy to both the performances (particularly, of course, Cage who gloriously hams it up with a highly entertaining gusto) as well as De Palma´s direction during these early stages... but then it just gradually fizzles away and by the end of it we´ve seen a story that´d hardly be worth an episode in any given cop series currently on TV; saying it´s derivative would only scratch the surface of how truly dull & generic piece it eventually turns out to be. And if even a visual stylist of De Palma´s caliber cannot make something out of this stuff then it´s safe to assume no one can. For the highly satisfying opening half an hour I give it 5,5-6/10. Somebody please give the guy a good story and a juicy budget before it´s too late.
