Is there a 'Snake Eyes' DVD formatted for 16:9?

Because mine isn't.

It came with a Nicolas Cage set that also included John Woo's "FaceOff" and Martin Scorcese's "Bringing Out the Dead." All widescreen.

Except "Snake Eyes" is the only DVD in the set that is NOT formatted for 16:9. Which sucks.

There are no DVDs released with this formatted for 16:9.

What I did was DVR it on Showtime HD, which has been playing it lately, and it is formatted for 16:9, and HD!

Now, that frustrates me, because you know HD, and 16:9 formatting is complete for this movie, but they have yet to release a DVD or even Blu-Ray with these capabilities.

Face Off & Bringing Out the Dead are 16:9

It looks like Snake Eyes is around 2.35:1, so it is Widescreen, just REALLY wide screen. Get a 52" TV and it starts to not matter! :)

When you format to 16:9, doesn't you really commit the same crime, just to a somewhat lesser degree, that is done when turned into 4:3? You remove parts of the image, parts of the director's vision. Why can't people accept letterbox?

reply

I completely agree. I think WS ticks off the people that still have the 4:3 tv's. I leave the movie in the aspect ratio it was meant for.

I was wrong when I said Showtime had 16:9 HD, it is actually Letterbox HD...2.35:1

Sorry for the confusion. Either way, they need to release an updated DVD/Blu-ray.

All three movies you have mentioned are in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio; and the region 2 of Snake Eyes (which I have) is 16:9 enhanced, so on a widescreen TV, you have just about an 1/8 of the screen black at the top and an 1/8 at the bottom.

So did you mean 16:9 ratio, or 16:9 enhanced, because the two are different.

Region 4 is 16:9 enhanced as well – just ran it on my computer, and that's how it showed up. (That and it says so on the box, but of course the box can't always be trusted...)

Not all movies are formatted 16:9. I like to keep the original aspect ratio. When movies are cropped or stretched to 16:9, THAT is what truly sucks.

Black bars are your friend. If they bother you that much, get an HD projector.

I mean, really. In fact, some tv's will crop or stretch the image for you to remove the bars. I think it's idiotic, personally, just like all the people who insisted on 4:3 DVDs... now they all need to buy widescreen copies!!! MORONS!

The Blu-ray is available now and obviously it is in the WS format; I just finished watching it and it looks AMAZING!

Cheers!
