Third Unfilmed Ending
All of the items below point to an ending where Cage's character has to close a door on Sinise's character in order to save Carla Gugino's character. In this ending Cage has to listen to Sinise's character drown while Cage's character is powerless to save him.
1. In interviews with the foreign press Brian DePalma voiced irritation at the influence of the studio system on this film. He said, "everyone has an idea of what should be in the script."
2. Sinise's character describes an incident where he gave the order to shut a hatch to save the ship and had to listen to the men in his command as they drown because they were trapped on the other side of the hatch, "They don't die quietly".
3. The lyrics of the song at the end of the movie are, "a drowning man does not die quietly".
4. In interviews with the foreign press Brian De Palma spoke about how the film was an alegory about water cleansing sin (the city, Sinise's character, and the redemption of Cage's character.
5. The first filmed ending called for a water sequence where the hallway was flooded.
6. Carla Gugino's character is trapped in a separate container from the hallway that was flooded in the first filmed ending.
