Disclaimer: I am obsessed with all things Rhoda Morgenstern and thus the actress who played her, the lovely, beautiful, and talented Valerie Harper.
As a 42-year-old transgender woman (full-time for 7 months now) who is therefore considered to be an outcast by many (as Rhoda was for being a New Yorker, a bohemian, an outspoken woman, and a Jew in Minneapolis on The Mary Tyler Moore Show), also as a New Yorker and as someone whose own mother passed away from brain cancer after living for several years after her expected expiration date, I can identify with Rhoda / Valerie on many levels. Also physically and in some ways emotionally, I am experiencing a second puberty; in other words, on the same level as a teenage girl.
The MTM and Rhoda shows were aired in first run in the 1970s. It is now 2016. There was about the same difference between the titular show (1950s) within the movie and the movie itself (1998).
Additionally, the Rhoda character evolved once her spinoff began. She was "the Mary" and her sister Brenda was "the Rhoda." Many characters in the movie began to experience similar personal growth. I myself have done so exponentially since my coming-out process began 3 years ago.
Many people idenfity with fictitious characters in books, movies, TV shows, and songs. It's not really uncommon.
