So how do people get colored?

I just finished watching this stupid movie and I still don't understand why people get colored all of a sudden. Plus, what happened to the contest that Tobey Meguire was gonna enter to win a $1000? I think I'm gonna watch The Godfather now just to remind myself that there are actually good movies out there.

Tomatoes. It is when they start to eat tomatoes. Before Bud goes to Pleasantville no one there had ever heard of tomatoes, and when he tells them about juicy, red tomatoes they start to get colored. It was a short scene, maybe you missed it.

hehe you remind me of my brother in law....he would say that too!

reply

They started to get coloured when they stepped out of their roles and thought outside what they were used to. Hence why the sister only starts getting coloured when she starts acting more like the people of Pleasantville.

just cos iv only got one leg, doesnt mean im only half a person

It seemed that they became coloured when they embraced passion.

reply

He means passion for anything. Passion for imagination/expression, passion for independence, passion for free will, intuitive passionate spontaneity, etc.

Basically wholeheartedness. From the gut. Passion.

I realize that sounded mean, sorry. :( Just my passion for free will, I guess. >_>

"silly, sexy, dangerous, brief" — in the words of Bud himself

... and in an even broader sense, sex, anger, violence, and adultery.

Which is why this movie is dangerous, subversive propaganda. Typical Hollyweird contempt for good old "flyover country," the soul of the real America.

reply

It seemed that way, but the timing of such an agenda was odd. Why in 1998 ... decades past the sexual revolution, the feminist and civil rights movements, during the second term of a very democratic democratic-President? Did they anticipate and fear the "second coming" of Bush?

reply

R-i-ght, that's why it did so well at the box office, because it was obviously showing contempt for "flyover America."

Does Fox News do _all_ your thinking for you, or do you buy underwear without their "guidance"?

reply

And when Jen only became a complete person when she rejected non-stop sexual encounters in favor of books and contemplation - which part of "dangerous, subversive propaganda" is that?

_______________

Nothing to see here, move along.

reply

This movie isn't propaganda. It is, quite simply, a great movie.

reply

This movie unquestionably is disgusting liberal propaganda.

reply

I hate to tell you this, but what is disgusting is you.

reply

On the contrary, what is disgusting is this film and its evil ideology.

reply

There is nothing evil about this film.

I seconed cesca's comment about it happening when they stepped out of their comfort zones. And at the end, the marathon and the money wasn't that important to him anymore.

Mostly I'm wondering what the parents would thing about their daughter being just gone, no explanation.

Lots of answers but I have to agree with those who say it happens when folks break out of their prior mold. Not experiencing passion - just changing from their prior "persona". Jen only changes after making it through one serious book; Bud/David changes after defying the TV repairman and slugging the kid giving his mom all the grief about her blue dress - and keep in mind, he was the biggest Pleasantville "nerd" there was beforehand.

I swear, some folks just don't know how to appreciate a movie. This was about the most metaphorical presentation of what mankind has gone through and evolved through - and in just the past 50 years - alone.

Whatever doesn't kill me only makes me stronger. How strong are you?

reply

I got the impression it was any strong emotional reaction.

reply

"I got the impression it was any strong emotional reaction."

Yes! I thought of it as any form of emotional development achieved through a variety of stimuli, such as sex, anger, excitement etc.

Jennifer was almost the reverse. She was the catalyst behind the changes, but her stay there allowed her latent academic talents to blossom, causing her colour change.

reply

If you failed to understand that then this so-called "stupid" movie is not for you.

In this movie, color is used as a metaphor for change and personal growth.

If you didn't get that, I'm sure you also didn't get the references to conformity, to the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden, to fear of change, to segregation and to fascism (book burning and the way the cinematographer uses a low shot of Big Bob during the trial, he looks down on people as a symbol of authority and repression).

This movie is full of symbolism and requires that you pay attention, a basic understanding of the history of that period also helps.

Brilliant film, it's not like the usual explosion a minute junk that they make these days. It makes you think ... something that some people refuse or are unable to do.

You could not understand this movie?!
