Why did the empty shoe box make Emily suspicious?

Perhaps Steven's reaction to seeing Emily waiting for him was enough for her to conduct her own investigation into his misdeeds?

Maybe Emily was just paranoid.

It was simply the way Steven behaved. She was also testing him by mentioning the locks being changed.

Yeah.

Or I guess the way he was acting, coupled with why would he come home with an empty shoe box.

I thought it was because he had walked in with an empty shoe box in a shopping bag. That's kind of weird.

I think what first made her suspicious was the shopping bag was all wrinkled.
