"The man don't just have to die, Fowley, I mean he could accidently hurt himself falling down on something real hard, you know, like a shiv or my dick."
The book was great, and the primary reason the movie was great was because Soderbergh didn't decide (as so many directors have) to reinvent a great Elmore Leonard book. He (and Scott Frank) simply brought a great story from book to screen.
Clooney has a lot, and I mean A LOT, to thank this movie for his brilliant career. In my opinion, this was the one that launched it to what we think of as a "George Clooney" role.
So, so true. The only other movie to adapt an Elmore Leonard novel so close to the book is Jackie Brown. Reading both OoS and JB, it's clear Soderberg and Tarantino wanted to change as little as possible and largely succeeded.
As far as Clooney goes, yeah OoS (and later the first Ocean's 11) both made Clooney and he owes Soderberg hugely for that.
