Cruise knife to the eye stunt

I know people are raving about the mi4 Dubai sequence but that knife on a cable rig must have taken some balls to do. A great example of a real life stunt that puts Cruise above many other action stars. The climbing scene was a bonus in this (and mi4) even with using cables/doubles.

The Dubai thing is above everything done in this film.

What was the knife on the cable rig though? Can you go into detail?

A guy opens his door and gets shot - you think that of me? No. I am the one who knocks!!

reply

If you go by the trivia section, its a real knife, Woo wanted it further away from his eye, Scott puts a lot of pressure on him - still safety measures but considering how unnecessary a real knife is to the scene people are impressed Cruise would do something like that just for an extra dose of realism.

reply

If that was a real knife, consider me hella impressed.

Even just taken on its own merits as a movie effect, it was just awesome.

reply

Yeah. It was a real knife that simply had a rope attached to the bottom end of the handle (out of frame) so it could only go so far down. That's how it stops right before his eye.

But do you recall how close it gets? It's like... a quarter inch. It's something crazy. Just imagine if the rope had stretched even slightly... Props to Cruise, I don't think he even flinched in the shot.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

reply

I don't believe it for a second. Far too much to risk just so he could look all methody. Between the probable objections of Scott, Woo, the money people, the insurance people... I just don't buy it. Relatively little to gain and Cruise isn't quite THAT stupid.

reply

Agreed. See my post 'THAT cliff face stunt...LIES!'

All I kept thinking while watching that: "Movie magic? Because that looks unbelievably real!"

Major props to Cruise.
