Was Just As Good As Any Other M:I Movie, Why The Hate?

Aside from a few bad lines, mostly given by Dougray Scott's Sean Ambrose character, the movie was fine. It had great directing and captured the stunts greatly. Except for when Ethan slides his bike around/(or under?) the truck on the road near the end..........I don't understand..........it was coming right at him, he panics, slides his bike, then suddenly he's 30 feet on the other side of the truck and then Sean comes onto the road from the side...........WTF..........

My only answer for you is that I think the other 4 MI movies feel like suspenseful spy thrillers, whereas this one feels like a cheap action flick. It's borderline Michael Bay.

The movie was a great success back in the day, because it dared to be something different and broke away from the style of its predecessor. The plotline was dumbed down and indeed disappointing, but it was compensated with excellent stunts and action, and everybody already knew from the trailers (and the name of the director) what we were going to get. The sequels that followed utilized the same "surprise" formula and were hence able to create M:I into a successful action franchise. None of the sequels ever returned to the spy thriller atmosphere of the first movie (as far as I know; I haven't seen Rogue Nation yet, but judging from the trailer it looks consistent with the 3rd and 4th movie).

From what I remember: Ethan approaches a T-crossing. Suddenly, a truck is approaching from the right and it has to hit the brakes in order to not hit Ethan. Ethan hits the brakes too, slides* and makes a sharp turn to the left. He never went underneath the truck.

[*] Actually, I'm not sure about the slide in that scene. Ethan makes a slide later when he crashes into an old car wreck at the side of the road. At that point, Ethan decides to go off-road, and he rides down into the woods.

EDIT: I looked it up, here's the scene:

The AVIS truck arrives at a T-crossing and is turning right, coming ahead of Ethan (and Sean). But since the motorcycles are switching lanes to and fro, the truck driver hesitates and stops his truck, thereby inadvertently blocking the intersection. Ethan then hits the brakes, side-skids and makes a sharp turn to the left. Sean follows Ethan and makes the left turn too. They never went underneath the truck.

However, there's an alienating shot from the other side of the truck at 0:37, where the camera pans from right to left. I suspect that they've edited this footage to play in reverse. I suspect that they were originally trying to film the motorcycle coming past the truck while making the turn, with a camera panning from left to right, but that the camera was somehow too slow to capture the sliding motorcycle in the frame. So since they were unsuccessful in capturing the sliding motorcycle, they then decided to use this footage as a "left turn from motorcycle's point-of-view" shot by playing it backwards in time. (At least that's my speculation.)

Notice the shadow of the truck is different than in a later shot; apparently this shot was taken at a different time of the day than the rest of the same sequence.

This is the only one I am able to get through, I really enjoyed the stunts and the surprises. I gave up on Ghost Protocol when he was climbing the building, the movie almost out me to sleep.
I'm surprised this gets so much hate when it was successful when it came out.

So far, I've only seen the first two, and the first one, while not good, was better.

It had great directing
No, it had directing like the director was busy watching cat videos on the net while trying to direct the film. You're confusing "good" and "competent".

captured the stunts greatly
If that had been true, the stunts would have been exciting and fun to watch. They were not.

Its a very good flick I enjoyed very much.

It was a mix between The world is not enough and Die another day two Bond flicks I really liked so its no surprise I enjoyed this one so much.
I guess what people hatted in this one is the over the top elements at the end all the masks with the changing voices, that why i say it reminded me to Die Another day since like M:I 2 it went a little too far in the special effects and hard to go with the flow too much suspension of desbelif.

Personally I don't mind they were just a few details. My only real complaint is the over long last fight they should have shortened that last fight maybe just one more Minute after the chase with the Bikes but no longer.

Still its a 9/10

Personally, I expect a bit more plot in a spy movie. I want a little but of intrigue. I want something that I can follow with twists & turns that come at unexpected times.

MI:2 had none of that. All it was, was artistic posturing & stunts. That's not a spy movie, it's a dumbed down action movie for the LCD masses that shout "Defense!"
