Ethan's inconsistent character..

Is this supposed to be the same Ethan as MI1 or 3? Because he seems completely different. His whole personality seems to have changed. MI1 and 3's are somewhat similar, but still pretty different. MI GP's Ethan seems like a nice mix between 1 and 2's Ethans.. what's up with this?

reply

After MI1, he was able to shake off the repressive mentality of his former mentor. In other words, he finally started to live a little.

I particular find it weird that an agent like Ethan cant figure out in his head when 20 hours have passed and needs a stop clock for it ?

reply

One of the biggest flaws of this series is that Ethan Hunt doesn't have a single definable character trait. He's all over the place. That lack of continuity keeps these films from feeling like they take place in the same universe. Instead they just feel like the latest Tom Cruise action movie.

Or alternatively, one could say that The Firm, Minority Report, Valkyrie, Knight And Day, and Edge Of Tomorrow are also Mission: Impossible movies, but just under different titles.

Although Ethan Hunt does have some trademarks though: he's a daredevil, versed in acrobatics, he is very dedicated to his job, and in every installment he can be seen suspended in the air from a rope. And unlike James Bond, he doesn't sleep around.

what is he afraid of,herpes?

reply

I agree, and that's why I tend to like yes, the MI movies and also Tom Cruise movies as well. I'm not in it for the sappy romantic parts, but I'm there to watch an action movie. There are plenty of films out there that utilize romantic leads and love interests, and they infiltrate the media. So it's nice to see movies where more attention can be focused on the action sequences.

I dont think he's all over the place. I just believe each film unlocks another part of his personality. Its all the same, it just depends on the extremity of the situation. We just see how far he's willing to go to get the job done. He still has the same personality. In MI:GP his personality is very much like it was in the first movie.

reply

wrong

in GP he has the same hair as mi2 and the same daredevilness, which for him means the same personality

reply

Nope, that is most certainly wrong. That is a horrible conclusion. Just because his appearance is similar to the 2nd movie does not mean is personality is the same. In the first movie, Ethan is very practive about the mission at hand. He doesn't let any inconvenience get in the way. He also never fires a gun Or kill anyone (with the exception of Phelps to stop them from escaping) In GP, it's the same scenario. He never even touches a gun in GP (Unless he's disarming someone), and he doesn't kill anyone....not even one person. In Mission Impossible 2, the stakes are very personal. He kills multiple bad guys in Mi2. And Ethan deals with a darker reality. No offense, But your conclusion of Long hair in GP = Same "Personality" in Mi2 is the dumbest conclusion i've ever heard.

reply

Who changes personalities except for a sociopath?

reply

Movie stars. Or maybe movie stars are sociopaths.

However, it could be argued that Ethan Hunt doesn't actively change his personality; instead, what changes is our perception of Ethan Hunt, because we watch him through different eyes (because of a different director).

And "same daredevilness"? He doesn't do anything similar to the stunts he pulled in mi2. He hasn't since mi2. In mi2, he pulls off a variety of flips and acrobatic turns. In GP, his fighting is a bit more grounded.

When I caught M:I II., I had only seen the previews from #1 and not much of #2 at all.
Completely unfamiliar with this Series; beyond the obvious: Tom Cruise leads the I.M. Force on an "Impossible Mission."
I saw Tom high up on top of the big Whiz Khalifa building promos . . . hanging onto the plane ad, in the commercials, but never a whole movie.

At first, his backflips and somersaults had me laughing. It was just so dumb. Later, as Hunt corkscrewed his way into another bad guy, some pigeons flew by, in slo-mo, I'd turned to my wife and said, "What, is this? Some kinda Jon Woo movie going on here?"
(I'd missed the beginning. )
She just shrugged, noncommittedly.

But somewhere around the 67th acrobatic combo, I was yelling "Aw, come on!" at the TV. "Enough with the flips!
It looks like Cirque de SoStupid."

It reminded me of that Barrel-Rolling Policeman video, where he's breaking up that teen pool party.

(Talk about being lucky, Donald Trump reportedly saw that Viral Video and was Very Impressed by the young policeman's agility.
The cop's being hired as part of Trump's Personal Security / Leader of Backup Bodyguards, Barrel Roll Division.
When asked about having his own security, Trump responded, "Look, the Secret Service is fine, they're good guys, but I'm more used to having my own people around me, I only hire the best, you know that.

"Maybe we should get Washington's Secret Service guys to wear a little pin or something, so we can tell who's who. Put a pin on their collar or lapel, with an "SS " on it. Then you know the Gov't security from my personal guys. . . .)

Yeah, talk about being lucky.

That was in the early 2000s dude. The action is alot more believable now. At least...the hand to hand scenes anyway.

I know what the OP means. In the first movie, Ethan's actions are mostly pretty realistic.

In 2, he's suddenly Neo from the Matrix, firing akimbo pistols and backflipping everywhere
